JOB DESCRIPTION
Key Aims:
- Plan and deliver the teaching of the KS2 Curriculum in line with the Primary National Curriculum and Birdwell School’s curriculum frameworks.
- Regularly assess and report on pupils’ progress in line with Department for Education and the school’s policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Teaching
The teacher will:
- keep up-to-date with current pedagogy and statutory government requirements pertaining to KS2
- plan lessons carefully with regard to the safety and well-being of pupils;
- teach classes so as to maximise the learning opportunities provided for each pupil within those classes, including regularly setting targets and activities;
- prepare in advance and keep records of programmes of study including the intent, implementation and impact plans of the curriculum;
- participate in arrangements for further training and professional development as required;
- maintain good behaviour amongst all pupils in the school, safeguarding their health and safety, both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere;
- be computer literate to a level which will allow them to effectively carry out the administrative and reporting aspects of the role;
Pastoral
The teacher will:
- have regard for the general well-being of all pupils in the school, but particularly for those in their class;
- have regard for the special educational and health needs of individual pupils, following advice from the SENCO;
- Report any safeguarding concerns on CPOMS and refer them immediately to a DSL
- communicate regularly with parents on matters relating to the educational development of their child. This includes attendance at parents’ consultations.
Health and Safety
The teacher will:
- be aware of, and observe School policies on Health and Safety requirements as set out in the relevant policy documents.
- be aware of current KCSIE reporting guidance and statutory frameworks with particular reference to children under five.
Induction, In-Service Training and Review
The teacher will:
- take part in any required Induction Programme in their first year at Birdwell School;
- identify their own training needs, in consultation with their Line Manager;
- share appropriate INSET experience with colleagues;
- take part in appropriate performance review procedures;
School
The teacher will:
- attend and contribute to staff meetings and parents’ meetings;
- attend all school events taking place within the normal function of the school day;
- play an active part in the presentation and display of pupils work on school display boards;
- conform to the dress and behaviour code for staff at the school;
- develop and maintain productive professional relationships with all staff, parents and the local community;
- actively promote the school within the community.

The following key personal/professional experiences, qualities, attributes and attitudes will be necessary for success in this post and the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate some or all of these by reference to their background, educational, and/or career history. Where this is not the case, he/she will clearly have the potential to develop or acquire such qualities.
Subject/role specific requirements
- Hold excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate the passion, skill and energy necessary for teaching children in the early years foundation stage.
- Have the personal awareness and insight to recognise when help, advice and support may be needed, and the willingness to seek and accept these.
- Have a record of appropriate continuing professional development / in-service training.
Personal qualities and attitudes
- Uphold and be supportive of the aims, values and ethos of Birdwell School.
- Communicate effectively, honestly and professionally with parents and carers.
- Demonstrate a collegiate approach and willingness to work as part of a professional team.

Essential qualifications/experience
- Hold Qualified teacher status.
- Previous experience of working in KS2
- Have the ability to work well as part of different teams.
- Demonstrate or have evidence of excellent teaching skills, and be a reliable and well-organised teacher and colleague, with excellent time management skills.
Desirable qualifications/experience
- Paediatric First Aid Certificate.
Details of the appointment
- This is a fixed term maternity cover post commencing September 2026.
- Full time
- Main pay scale dependent on skills and experience.
- The offer of this post is subject to statutory clearance by the Disclosure and Barring Service and Teachers’ Prohibition list check.
- The appointment will be subject to two satisfactory references, one of which must be from the candidate’s most recent employer, online searches . Although the post may be offered, the appointment cannot be confirmed until satisfactory references and all safeguarding checks are received.
