Learning Support Assistant job summary

At Ormiston Denes Academy, we’re looking for a warm, patient and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant to join our friendly and experienced SEND team. This is a role where you’ll make a genuine difference every single day, helping students overcome barriers to learning and grow in confidence, both in the classroom and beyond.

Working closely with our SENCO and classroom teachers, you’ll support students one to one and in small groups, helping them to access the curriculum and make real progress. No two days are the same. One moment you might be adapting a planned activity to suit how a student is responding, the next you could be running a targeted intervention, preparing resources for a lesson or letting a teacher know how a learner is getting on. You’ll also help us put Education, Health and Care Plans into practice and contribute to reviewing Individual Learning Support Plans, so your insight into each student will really matter. Of course, learning is about much more than lessons. You’ll be a reassuring presence for students’ social and emotional wellbeing, encouraging positive behaviour, helping them take responsibility for their choices and supporting their personal development alongside our wider SEND and Pastoral teams.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who is caring, child-centred and passionate about inclusion. You’ll be a natural communicator who builds positive relationships quickly with students and colleagues alike, and you’ll be confident using ICT and a keyboard. You’ll need a GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English (grade C or above), along with an understanding of, and commitment to, safeguarding, child protection, health and safety and equality of opportunity.

If you’ve worked with children in a school or educational setting before, that’s wonderful, but please don’t let a lack of experience hold you back. Some knowledge of the national curriculum and learning strategies would be helpful, but it isn’t essential, as full training will be provided. What matters most is your enthusiasm for helping young people succeed.
