What skills and experience we're looking for

Would you like to make a difference?

Could you help young people access the best possible life opportunities?

Finch Woods Academy, is a part of Manor Hall Academy Trust, are looking to recruit Local Advisory members to our Local Advisory Committee.

What are Local Advisory Committee (LACs) and what do they do?

LACS are a group of individuals, sometimes known as governors, of all ages and from all walks of life and backgrounds who come together to work closely with the leaders of the schools to ensure that the pupils, who all have some degree of social, emotional and mental health issues, have access to the best possible school opportunities and preparation for the wider world. They also will also ask questions and provide appropriate professional challenge.

Our Terms of Reference advise that there should be at least seven members of the LAC. This includes the Headteacher, nominated staff member, two parent governors; while the rest of the board can be comprised of co-opted or community members. We would like our board to have a diverse range of skills and experience.

Do I need to have experience?

No. If you have experience of being a LAC Member that’s great. However, no experience or particular expertise is called for, a desire to make a difference to pupils’ lives is sufficient. Training, often online, will be provided to help you understand your role and to enable you to explore your area of interest, be it safeguarding, health and safety, finance or careers – to name but a few! We also encourage applications from anyone involved in education (current or retired).

If you already have previous or current experience in an area such as safeguarding or health and safety, you may also have the opportunity to take on the role of link LAC Member. This is a person who is nominated to take the lead in a specific area

What areas may I have to look into?

As a LAC Member you will be presented with papers to read in advance and this will include information about areas such as: teaching and learning, wellbeing, finance, policies, safeguarding and leadership and management.

Is it time-consuming?

A virtual or a face-to-face meeting take place twice each term and these can last between one and two hours. In addition, you will be welcomed into school to meet pupils and staff and experience the environment and learning in action. LAC Members are encouraged to find an area of interest and meet with the person in school responsible. Also, there is a growing trend for companies to allow employees time off to take up such roles!

Documents are provided in advance of the meeting so that you are prepared to ask those important questions about our school. There may also be occasions where you may be requested to sit on other panels such as those concerning exclusions or complaints.

Is it daunting and formal?

Not at all. Our LACs are all friendly individuals who have a common purpose and the futures of the pupils and schools at heart. Mentoring and support are available.

Becoming a LAC Member will give you the chance to make a real difference to young people, give something back to your local community and join the largest volunteer force in the country - there are over a quarter of a million governors from all backgrounds! And the bonus for yourself, you’ll have the opportunity to develop new skills in a safe environment and get to know a new group of people with a common focus.

I’m interested, what next?

Anyone over 18 is eligible, and if you feel this is for you, please don’t hesitate to contact executiveheadteacher@adelaide.cheshire.sch.uk to find out more.
