Maths Teacher - Second in Department job summary
Teaching Maths is like showing someone how to cook. Instead of simply handing them a recipe, it's about helping students understand why certain ingredients fit together, encouraging them to experiment with different approaches, and building their confidence so they can create their own solutions independently.
As a leader in Maths, the role goes one step further. It's about helping colleagues refine their craft, sharing best practice, developing a culture of excellence, and ensuring every student experiences high-quality teaching that enables them to achieve their full potential.
At Oasis Academy Don Valley, we believe Maths is a key that unlocks opportunities for life. Our curriculum is rich, ambitious, and designed to inspire curiosity, resilience, and success. We are seeking an exceptional practitioner and aspiring or experienced leader to join our team as Second in Department - Maths, working alongside the Head of Maths to drive standards, support staff development, and raise achievement across the department.
The Role
We are looking for a passionate and committed Second in Department - Maths (TLR2) who can combine excellent classroom practice with strong leadership skills. You will support the Head of Maths in leading the department, developing teaching and learning, monitoring student progress, and ensuring that every young person is given the opportunity to thrive.
This is an exciting opportunity for a talented teacher looking to take the next step in their leadership journey or an experienced middle leader seeking a new challenge within a supportive and ambitious academy.
As Second in Department - Maths, you will:
- Deliver outstanding Maths lessons across KS3 and KS4 that inspire and challenge students.
- Support the Head of Maths in leading and managing the department to raise standards and improve outcomes.
- Lead on a key phase, curriculum area, or academy priority within Maths.
- Use assessment data effectively to monitor progress, identify gaps, and implement targeted interventions.
- Support curriculum development to ensure consistency, progression, and high expectations across the department.
- Lead, coach, and mentor colleagues, sharing best practice and supporting professional development.
- Conduct learning walks, quality assurance activities, and curriculum reviews to drive continual improvement.
- Champion inclusive teaching strategies that enable all students, including those with SEND, to achieve their potential.
- Promote high standards of behaviour, attendance, and engagement within the classroom and across the department.
- Contribute to departmental self-evaluation, improvement planning, and academy initiatives.
- Be an outstanding role model for students and colleagues in teaching, professionalism, and commitment to the Oasis ethos.
What We’re Looking For
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Mathematics or a related subject.
- A proven track record of excellent classroom practice and securing strong outcomes for students.
- Experience of supporting leadership within a Maths department or curriculum area.
- Strong knowledge of curriculum design, assessment, and intervention strategies.
- Experience of coaching, mentoring, or delivering professional development to colleagues.
- The ability to analyse and use student performance data to drive improvement.
- High expectations of achievement, behaviour, and personal development for every student.
- A commitment to inclusion and raising aspirations for all learners.
- Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- The ambition and drive to contribute to the continued development of a thriving Maths department.nt
