Midday Supervisory Assistant job summary

MDSA vacancy - temporary role to 31.08.27 - 1 hour a day

Monday - Thursday 12 - 1pm

Friday - 11:40pm - 12:40pm

Midday Supervisory Assistant - Primary School

Job Purpose
To support the school in providing a safe, happy and positive environment for pupils during the lunchtime period. The MDSA will supervise children in the dining hall, playground and other designated areas, encouraging positive behaviour, independence and respectful relationships.

Main Responsibilities

  • Supervise pupils safely throughout the lunchtime period, including in the dining hall, playground and indoor areas.
  • Ensure pupils follow the school’s behaviour expectations and lunchtime routines.
  • Encourage positive play, cooperation, sharing and respectful behaviour.
  • Support children who may need additional help or reassurance during lunchtime.
  • Be alert to safeguarding concerns and report any concerns promptly to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Respond appropriately to minor incidents, accidents and disagreements between pupils.
  • Administer basic first aid where trained and seek additional support when required.
  • Encourage good table manners, healthy eating and independence in the dining hall.
  • Help children who need support with their meals, while encouraging them to do as much as possible independently.
  • Monitor the playground and actively engage with children to promote positive and inclusive play.
  • Support children who may struggle with friendships, social situations or managing their emotions.
  • Follow school procedures for behaviour, safeguarding, first aid and health and safety.
  • Help maintain a clean, tidy and safe environment.
  • Liaise appropriately with teachers and other staff regarding any concerns arising during lunchtime.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties relating to the role.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys working with children and is committed to their wellbeing.
  • Has a calm, caring and positive approach.
  • Is confident in managing children's behaviour consistently and fairly.
  • Can build positive relationships with pupils.
  • Has good communication skills and can work effectively as part of a team.
  • Is able to remain calm and professional when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Understands the importance of safeguarding and maintaining children's safety.
  • Is reliable, punctual and responsible.
  • Can use initiative and respond appropriately to unexpected situations.
  • Is willing to support the school's values and ethos.

We would like to recruit an MDSA who is flexible, enthusiastic and confident working with children across the primary age range. Your role will be to ensure that children are safe, happy and healthy during their lunchtimes.

Experience of working in a primary school is desirable although full training will be given. You must be organised, positive and able to build good relationships with both the children and your colleagues. Excellent communication skills, the ability to use your initiative and to work independently are important skills for this role.
