King's Academy Lord Wilson is an expanding, high-performing special school supporting boys aged 11 to 16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We are seeking an organised, safety-conscious and proactive Multi-Disciplinary Technician to join our team.
With our growing student numbers, expanded practical curriculum and heavy investment in our Food Technology, Science and Art facilities, this role is vital. You will ensure high safety standards when managing high-risk practical environments, oversee robust stock-control procedures (including equipment counts and sharps management) and safeguard our resources so that students get the best possible practical experience.
Because we operate in an SEMH setting, you will work closely alongside SLT and department leads to adapt standard risk assessments, ensuring practical learning is tailored, safe and accessible for our young people.

Responsible to: Assistant Headteacher (Raising Standards)
Job PurposeTo provide high-quality technical, administrative and practical support across the Food Technology, Science and Art departments. The post holder will manage practical spaces to ensure full compliance with Health and Safety regulations (including CLEAPSS) and maintain strict risk-management procedures appropriate for SEMH learners. Working with the support of SLT and subject leads, the post holder will review and adapt standard risk assessments to meet the complex regulation and safety needs of SEMH students. Additionally, the role involves protecting and maintaining the school investment in specialist subject equipment and providing targeted classroom support during practical sessions.
Key Responsibilities1. High-Risk Equipment, Sharps Management and SEMH Risk AdaptationWork with the support of SLT and department heads to continuously review, adjust and adapt department risk assessments, ensuring safety controls are tailored to the specific behavioural, emotional and regulation needs of SEMH students.
Implement and enforce strict equipment accounting protocols before, during and after practical lessons, such as counting tools, glassware, cutlery and practical equipment in and out.
Oversee the secure storage and audit of high-risk items, maintaining secure lockable storage including sharps cupboards, chemical stores and specialist tool cabinets.
Conduct pre-lesson safety checks of all tools, apparatus and room setups to prevent unsafe items or damaged equipment from entering the classroom environment.
Immediately report and log any missing, damaged or compromised items in line with school safeguarding, risk management and health and safety policies.
Maintain a comprehensive central inventory across Food, Science and Art to protect the school heavy investment in practical resources.
Carry out routine maintenance, cleaning, servicing and repair checks across all department assets to prolong equipment lifespan.
Ensure all materials, equipment and specialised tools are organised, securely stored and properly cared for after every practical session.
Manage the weekly ordering and procurement of ingredients, working strictly within the department budget.
Check, maintain and log all kitchen equipment to ensure safety and functionality.
Prepare and organise ingredients and equipment for practical cooking lessons.
Oversee the maintenance and operation of the laundry room for aprons and tea towels.
Ensure strict food hygiene and deep cleaning standards are maintained in the food room.
Manage the science classroom and the two associated prep and storage cupboards.
Prepare, set up and dismantle equipment, chemicals and resources required for Science practicals.
Maintain accurate stock control of chemicals and equipment, organising reorders as necessary.
Ensure full health and safety compliance, including the safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials in line with CLEAPSS guidelines.
Manage the Art room and the two associated resource cupboards.
Organise, store and deploy resources and media for both standard KS3 lessons and specialised GCSE Art sessions.
Maintain an organised inventory of materials such as paints, clays and tools while prepping materials for lessons.
Ensure the Art room remains a safe, compliant and clean working environment.
Act as a key operator for CLEAPSS guidelines across Food, Science and Art, ensuring all practical work complies with current legislation.
Conduct regular safety checks, equipment maintenance logs and environment reviews, modifying practical setups in partnership with SLT to maintain student and staff safety.
Complete any required CLEAPSS technician training which will be fully funded by the school.
Provide additional classroom support during practical sessions, assisting teachers in managing student behaviour, dysregulation and engagement to maintain a calm, secure learning environment.

Qualifications and Training
Good literacy and numeracy skills (GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent in English and Maths).
Willingness to undergo CLEAPSS technician training.
Food Hygiene Certificate.
First Aid qualification.
Existing CLEAPSS or health and safety certification.
Experience
Experience in stock management, equipment control or inventory logging.
Experience working in a school, laboratory, kitchen, workshop or clinical environment.
Experience or awareness of risk management and adapting safety protocols in an SEMH, SEND, health or care setting.
Experience as a technician in Science, Art or Food.
Experience working alongside SLT or middle leaders to write or adapt risk assessments.
Knowledge and Skills
Meticulous attention to detail regarding tool counting, sharps logging and secure storage.
Strong understanding of basic health and safety principles, risk mitigation and how to adapt practical activities for vulnerable learners.
Ability to manage time effectively across three different departments.
Basic IT skills for budgeting, inventory logging and stock ordering.
Knowledge of COSHH and CLEAPSS guidelines.
Understanding of GCSE Art or Science curriculum requirements.
