What skills and experience we're looking for
Are you committed to ensuring you get the best out of every child? Are you looking for an opportunity to take the next step in your career within a friendly but ambitious small team, whilst maintaining a work-life balance?
The Local Governing Body of Lorton School invite applications from appropriately qualified teachers for this part time post, teaching a small Key Stage 2 class, along with some further teaching across the full Key Stage 2 range/class (and/or Reception/Key Stage 1), and ideally the opportunity to lead Maths in the school. The post is offered from the start of the Autumn term, as a 0.6 post (ideally a minimum of 4 mornings and 1 afternoon) but there is the opportunity to extend this to 0.8 to suit the needs and expertise of the successful candidate, in part using PE funding. The post is offered initially on a one year contract due to the current uncertainties in school funding, but there is potential for this to become permanent and we would like to find someone who would become a committed long term member of the team.
We are looking for:
- An excellent primary classroom practitioner with a deep understanding of primary curriculum, assessment and pedagogy.
- Someone who will work collaboratively with other members of staff, be flexible, well organised and enthusiastic and build positive relationships with pupils and their parents.
- Someone who is committed to get the best out of every child and to providing an imaginative and exciting curriculum.
- Someone who will continue to develop our strong personal development offer.
The successful candidate will:
- have experience of working within Key Stage 2 and ideally be ready to lead Maths in our school (working with the Maths Hub to take our maths teaching and learning on to the next level)
- be able to plan and deliver lessons that meet children’s individual needs and capture their interests in all areas of the curriculum but particularly English and Maths
- have ambitious expectations of pupils’ work and behaviour, engendering respect through positive relationships and consistency
- be a committed team member who will play an active part in the life of the school, engage positively with families and lead by example
- know how to keep our children protected, safe and provide an
environment where they can thrive.
What the school offers its staff
We can offer you:
- A brilliant opportunity to progress your career in a school with a real family feel
- A committed staff who put our children first and centre
- A supportive parent group (FOLS), Local Governing Body and wider local community
- An opportunity to work within the supportive collaborative network of the Good Shepherd Trust and in a fantastic location in the Lake District National Park

Lorton Primary School is a small rural school of 45 pupils and is part of the Good Shepherd Trust. The school dates back to the late nineteenth century. Over the years it has been updated, improved and new buildings added. It is located in the heart of the village of Lorton and in one of England’s most beautiful valleys. It serves a wide catchment area from the head of Buttermere to include the whole Lorton Vale and Embleton; some children from Cockermouth attend the school. The majority of children transfer to Cockermouth School for their secondary education and we have well-established links with Cockermouth School.
The Local Governing Body is supportive and involved in the life of the school and are supported by The Good Shepherd Trust. The Good Shepherd Trust oversee the work that we do and all of the schools in the Trust benefit from a wealth of knowledge and expertise and a close working relationship.
Parents are extremely supportive and Friends of Lorton School (FOLS) play a key role and are keen to raise money and help the school in appropriate ways. Funds raised are used to provide many enrichment opportunities for the children.
Our last Ofsted Inspection held in the Spring Term of 2020 was successful and recognised the school as a ‘good school’ with some outstanding elements. The school has a strong 'personal development' offer including '60 things to do whilst you are at Lorton School' which recognises the unique opportunities the school provides for its pupils.
