Pastoral and Welfare Lead (Secondment Opportunity)

6-Month Initial Secondment Opportunity

Start Date: January 2027

At Leighton Academy, our vision is rooted in the values of aspiration, respect, resilience, kindness and responsibility. We believe that every child deserves to feel safe, valued and supported so they can achieve their full potential both academically and personally. As our Pastoral and Welfare Lead, you will play a vital role in championing these values each day, ensuring that children and families receive the guidance, care and support they need to flourish within our school community.

Are you passionate about supporting children and families to overcome barriers to learning and thrive both socially and emotionally? This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and compassionate professional to take on the role of Pastoral and Welfare Lead within our nurturing primary school environment. The role is offered as an initial 6-month secondment, providing an excellent opportunity to develop and transfer your skills within a pastoral, safeguarding and attendance leadership role, to gain experience in a larger primary school setting.

About the Role

Working closely with the Principal, Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and wider school team, you will play a pivotal role in supporting vulnerable pupils and families, promoting excellent attendance, and strengthening safeguarding practices across the school.

You will:

Work alongside the DSL as Deputy Safeguarding Lead to support robust safeguarding systems and practices.

Provide pastoral support for children experiencing social, emotional or behavioural challenges.

Support staff in responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns and disclosures.

Lead attendance processes, working with families, external agencies and the Education Welfare Service to improve attendance and reduce persistent absence.

Coordinate support and interventions for vulnerable pupils and families.

Work collaboratively with external professionals and agencies to secure the best outcomes for children.

Support the delivery of trauma-informed approaches and relational practice across the school.

Provide guidance and support to staff regarding behaviour, wellbeing and intervention strategies.

Contribute to staff training and ensure safeguarding records and training audits remain up to date.

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

Has experience working with children, families and vulnerable pupils in an education, social care or pastoral setting.

Demonstrates a strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and children's welfare.

Has excellent communication, organisational and record-keeping skills.

Can build positive relationships with pupils, families, staff and external agencies.

Has knowledge of trauma-informed practice and effective strategies to support children facing barriers to learning.

Is resilient, proactive and able to work independently whilst contributing positively to a team.

Shares our commitment to inclusion, high expectations and ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed.

What We Offer

A rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference to children's lives.

A supportive and collaborative team environment.

Opportunities for professional development and leadership experience.

Exposure to safeguarding, attendance and pastoral leadership responsibilities.

The opportunity to develop transferable skills that could support future progression within a larger primary school setting.

A school community that places children's wellbeing and success at the heart of everything it does.
