Overall Purpose of the Role

To assist the Headteacher and other members of the Senior Leadership Team in ensuring that children's welfare is promoted and safeguarded effectively and efficiently.

Reporting to the SENDCo, with support from the Headteacher and SLT, the post requires you to develop, implement and monitor strategies for pupil welfare, behaviour and attendance. You will build and maintain strong links with families, the local community and external support agencies.

Safeguarding Requirements

This post requires the post holder to work in settings with children and young adults. Any employment offer is therefore subject to the results of an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). People who may have contact with younger children (i.e. primary school age) are also required to complete a declaration about family or other members of their household.

Key Outputs

To oversee the pastoral care, welfare and behaviour of all pupils in the academy.

To support SLT/the Admin Team with the intake or transfer of any pupils throughout the year and transition into and out of the academy.

Work with teaching and support staff to comprehensively assess all children entering or returning to school, to identify those who need extra help to overcome barriers to learning inside and outside of school.

To maintain pupil/academy records and any other records relevant to your role. Ensuring information is collated and shared where appropriate. Organise and attend meetings with staff, governors, parents and other professionals as appropriate.

Assist with the behaviour management of pupils throughout the course of the academy day by being a visible presence before during and after school, during lesson changeover and at breaks and lunchtimes.

To collect and interpret specialist assessment data and records of incidents, using these to inform practice and implement follow up action and school improvement activity.

To work under the direction of the SENDCO to oversee/contribute to the provision for specific individuals and groups of pupils.

To work directly with pupils (and their families) to develop behaviour and inclusion strategies for specific pupils - advising teachers and support staff as appropriate.

To provide pastoral support by providing programmes for individuals/groups tailored to their needs and to help unlock their barriers to learning.

In conjunction with the teacher, provide one to one support for targeted pupils on a short-term basis.

Support the Senior Leadership Team to lead, manage and coordinate the effective use of support staff, including lunchtime supervision.

To support safeguarding as a key member of the Safeguarding Team - undertaking training and duties as and when required.

To contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of strategies and policies for behaviour management and inclusion.

To contribute to staff professional development in relation to safeguarding, inclusion, behaviour and attendance.

Assist, support and develop before and after school enrichment programmes for specific groups of pupils in consultation with the SENDCO and the Senior Leadership Team.

To help monitor the attendance and punctuality of all children including ‘at risk’ groups - setting targets for improvement.

To develop strategies to ensure attendance targets are met. Liaising with families and external agencies as appropriate

To undertake a First Aid in schools certificate; to oversee medication administration to pupils requiring it; to lead on First Aid policy and practice across the academy.

To undertake any other duties and training associated with the role, as may be decided by your line manager.

Expertise in Role Required (At Selection - Level 1)

NVQ 3 or equivalent qualifications or experience (Essential)

Educated to Maths and English GCSE 4 or above or equivalent (Essential)

Successful experience of working with children preferably within a primary school setting (Essential)

Some experience or the ability to lead and manage inclusion in a primary school setting (Essential)

Relevant training, knowledge and expertise in school safeguarding (Essential)

Experience of dealing with a range of challenging behavioural issues, using effective strategies to manage behaviour and promote inclusion (Essential)

Experience of working and communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders including parents/carers and families, staff and external agencies (Essential)

Up to date knowledge of relevant policies, codes of practice and legislation (Essential)

Evidence of continuing professional development and a willingness to undertake further development as appropriate (Essential)

Good working relationships with service providers who are able to support children and families.

Expertise in Role (Advanced - Level 3)

Ability to lead safeguarding as part of the academy’s designated safeguarding team, ensuring that safeguarding policies, procedures and practice are highly effective.

Ability to work in partnership with the SENCO to lead inclusion, providing highly effective provision to improve outcomes for all children.

To lead and manage pastoral care, under the direction of the Headteacher, providing highly effective provision to improve outcomes for all children.

Active involvement with the development and implementation of pupil support strategies.
