What skills and experience we're looking for

We are currently recruiting for an additional Pastoral Officer to join an established team. Our Pastoral Officers form an important part of our staff team, supporting students and colleagues to give the highest quality holistic support to our young people. We are looking for individuals with some of the following skills, knowledge and experience:

  • able to establish effective relationships with parents/carers, students and outside agencies
  • experienced in supporting students to access learning, and producing behaviour and intervention plans
  • experienced in supporting people with mental health issues
  • experienced in supporting people with social and emotional barriers to learning
  • able to engage and motivate students
  • ability to supervise students to ensure their safety and positive behaviour
  • flexibility to work across the whole college as required
  • experienced in supporting students with a ride range of additional needs
  • excellent organisational skills
  • able to perform a duty role to support students and colleagues across the college
  • able to use initiative and work effectively in a team

What the school offers its staff

Oak Grove College is a community generic special school providing special education for 286 students with learning difficulties/disabilities from Year 7 to Year 14. We are part of the Thrive Federation of Schools which also includes Palatine Primary School, Herons Dale School and Cornfield School.

Purpose of the Role

To work with other staff as part of a professional team to provide the highest quality holistic support to our students who need particular help to overcome barriers to learning. Students may have a range of moderate, severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties and/or behaviour, social, communication, sensory or physical difficulties. Providing timely support and advice to colleagues is also a key operational part of the role.

The post holder will provide support to the College in a range of duties. This is an outline of the job role which includes but is not limited to:

  • To join the PRICE instructors team and lead the college in training/consultation
  • Take a part in the ‘duty manager’ rota
  • To record duty incidents on CPOMS and follow through with them in conjunction with other staff
  • To lead/manage debriefs after incidents.
  • To use CPOMS (and other MIS software) highly effectively to produce reports and identify trends and issues.
  • Develop a positive interaction and contact with parents/families to ensure highly effective engagement and communication with the College
  • Ensure students are recognised for success.
  • Take part in lunchtime duties to ensure the safe operation of the college.
  • Support students requiring additional temporary support in class to access learning and produce behaviour plans and intervention plans to support students.
  • To lead on individual and small group intervention in relation to developing social and emotional skills
  • To attend meetings with external agencies and represent the college.
  • To follow through and check on student and staff welfare after behaviour incidents.
  • To supervise students arrival and departure at College to ensure safe transition to school transport
  • To collate information for meetings regarding students in vulnerable groups
  • To offer support and training to staff.
  • Any other reasonable direction from the Headteacher.
  • The content and reporting lines may, in consultation with the employee, be reviewed because duties change over time, and the job description needs to reflect these changes.
