Phase Leader job summary

St Margaret’s Junior School is a very successful school located at the heart of the community within Rainham, Kent. The school has 365 children on roll from Year 3 to Year 6. The last Ofsted inspection in 2023 graded the school “good” and our last Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) concurred by awarding the school a grading of “good” as well. Together with three other local Church schools, we are part of the Medway Anglican Schools Trust.

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and ambitious Phase Leader from September 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for someone ready to take the next step into leadership. This person should have a positive attitude who passionate and dedicated in enabling all of our children to thrive. Job Title: Phase Leader

Pay Range: MPS/UPS + TLR2 (weighted according to role size)

Responsible to: Headteacher / Senior Leader

Purpose of the Role

To lead a defined phase of the school, ensuring high-quality teaching, strong pupil outcomes, and consistent practice across the phase.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership of Staff

  • Line manage and support teachers and support staff within the phase
  • Contribute to appraisal and performance management
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and support to improve teaching

2. Quality of Teaching

  • Monitor teaching and learning across the phase
  • Ensure consistency of expectations and practice
  • Lead improvement in pedagogy and classroom practice

3. Pupil Outcomes

  • Be accountable for pupil progress and attainment across the phase
  • Analyse data and identify priorities for improvement
  • Lead pupil progress discussions within the phase

4. Curriculum & Provision

  • Ensure the curriculum is delivered consistently and effectively
  • Support staff with planning and assessment
  • Monitor provision for all groups of pupils

5. Contribution to Whole School

  • Contribute to school improvement priorities
  • Work with other leaders to ensure coherence across the school

The Phase Leader is accountable for:

  • Quality of teaching across the phase
  • Pupil outcomes within the phase
  • Staff performance and development within the phase
