The school has 300 pupils aged 2 to 11, and takes eligible children into its pre-school the term after their second birthday. Most year groups are single form entry but as numbers have increased there are now two classes in several year groups. The school was inspected in June 2019 and judged to Require Improvement. The Foundation Stage was judged to be Good. A recent LA review concluded the school was making good progress towards its improvement priorities.

Children enter pre-school significantly below age related expectations but as they move through the school they make good progress and many traditionally leave us having achieved in line with or above national expectations. However, the pandemic has had a huge impact on many children and the main aim of the school over the next academic year will be to ensure children catch up on lost learning. There is a determined focus in the Foundation Stage on promoting children’s speech and language, vocabulary, physical development and personal, social and emotional development.

We wish to appoint a Pre-school leader who will play a full part in the life of the Foundation Stage and contribute to whole school improvement initiatives. Our children are friendly and rewarding and with inspiring teaching and consistent boundaries can achieve and make outstanding progress, despite many having very low starting points. We are looking for a leader who has energy and enthusiasm, and is keen to become part of and contribute to our strong, supportive team. We offer a programme of individual support, supervision and CPD to ensure the successful candidate quickly becomes part of our school team and shares our Abbeyhillian ethos and aims.

Abbey Hill is very much a nurturing, family school and many parents and carers look to the school to support them with their children. We are looking for someone who can develop good relationships with parents and carers, helping them to provide the best possible start for their children. Our child and family support worker works closely with staff to support parents in a variety of ways and the school has excellent relationships with many outside agencies. A key focus of the school has always been promoting children’s emotional and social development, and now, following lockdown, re-establishing school routines, relationships and behaviour for learning.

The number of children eligible for the Pupil Premium is significantly above the national average at 67%. The school is part of the Together As One collaboration of seven schools, who work closely together to improve outcomes for pupils and to provide joint CPD for staff.

Nottinghamshire County Council and the school are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be required to comply with all requirements of the school’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
