Reading Mentor job summary
Main aims of
Job:
The reading mentor will work closely with the
SEND department and the English team to:
●
Assess
students' reading abilities and identify areas of weakness
●
Train
up in, and deliver bespoke reading intervention programmes
●
Provide
one-on-one and small group instruction to pupils
●
Derive
measurable outcomes by monitoring, tracking and being accountable for student
progress, making adjustments to teaching plans as needed
●
Communicate
with parents and carers regarding student progress
●
Establish
constructive relationships and communicate with other teaching staff to support
the achievement and progress of pupils
●
Provide
feedback to teachers/subject leads/Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and agree next
steps
●
Participate
in professional development and stay current with best practices in reading
instruction
●
Recognise
own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to work collaboratively,
advising and supporting others
●
To
comply with and assist with the development of policies and procedures
●
Contribute
to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
●
To
be aware of and adhere to applicable rules, regulations, legislation and
procedures including the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy and Code of
Conduct, national legislation (including Health and Safety, Data Protection).

To
maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of undertaking
duties for the department.

To
undertake other duties appropriate to the grading of the post as required.
Person
Specification:
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in education or a related field, with a focus on reading instruction and assessment, is preferred but not required.
Must have excellent levels of literacy and numeracy (GCSE grade A-C/5-9 or equivalent).
Experience (preferred but not essential):

Some
experience of working with young people/pupils
●
Experience
in developing and implementing reading intervention plans
●
Experience
in assessment and evaluation of pupil progress
●
Experience
working with students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs
●
Experience
working with students with special needs is a plus
Skills
and Abilities:

Excellent
communication skills, both oral and written
●
Strong
organisational and time management skills
●
Strong
problem-solving and critical thinking skills
●
Strong
ability to work independently and as part of a team
●
Strong
ability to build relationships with pupils, parents, and staff
