Reading Support Assistant (Reading Interventions) job summary

Job overview:

  • To provide high-quality, targeted reading interventions for students in Years 7 to 11 to improve literacy outcomes across the academy.
  • To be based primarily in the library, leading the assessment of students' reading abilities and implementing "stage-not-age" intervention programmes.
  • To support students across a broad spectrum of need, ranging from fundamental letter and word recognition to advanced reading and comprehension fluency.
  • To bridge the gap between targeted intervention and the wider curriculum by supporting students within the classroom to apply their literacy skills.
  • Be proactive in supporting the wider reading team to foster a love of reading and a culture of literacy across the student body.
  • Support the librarian with administration of the library.

Working hours:

32.50 hours p/w - term time only plus 5 days, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Mon-Fri

Job requirements:

  • High levels of academic literacy.
  • Understanding of "stage-not-age" intervention pedagogy and barriers to reading.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to enthuse and motivate others to foster a love of reading.
  • Confident in the use of information and communication technology (ICT).
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Experience delivering literacy or reading interventions.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Willingness to share expertise, skills, and knowledge.
  • Sensitivity to the aspirations, needs, and self-esteem of others.
