School Caretaker (Part time) job summary

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable School Caretaker to maintain the safety, cleanliness, and overall upkeep of our small village school. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in ensuring the school environment is welcoming, secure, and well-maintained for staff and students alike. This position offers an opportunity to contribute positively to the school community by providing a clean and safe environment conducive to learning and development.

Duties

  • Conduct regular inspections of the school premises to identify maintenance or safety issues
  • Carry out general cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and waste disposal to uphold high standards of hygiene
  • Maintain and repair fixtures such as lights, doors, windows, and furniture as required
  • Ensure all health and safety protocols are adhered to, including checking fire alarms and emergency exits are accessible
  • Manage security systems and oversee access control to ensure the safety of staff and pupils
  • Assist with setting up classrooms and event spaces for school activities or meetings
  • Report any damages or hazards promptly to the appropriate authorities for resolution
  • Oversee external grounds maintenance, including gardening or snow clearance when necessary
  • Liaise with school staff regarding maintenance schedules and urgent repairs

Requirements

  • Proven experience in building maintenance, cleaning, or caretaking roles preferred but not essential; training will be provided where necessary
  • Strong organisational skills with an eye for detail
  • Ability to undertake physical tasks including lifting, moving equipment, and working at heights if required
  • Good understanding of health and safety regulations relevant to school environments
  • Reliable with a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Flexibility to respond promptly to urgent repairs or emergencies outside normal working hours if needed
  • Basic knowledge of security systems and procedures is advantageous
  • Must demonstrate the ability to speak fluent English at a level appropriate to be able to carry out the duties of the post.
