Why This Isn't Your Average Science Lab!
We are looking for a Science Teacher who understands that a "failed experiment" is often the best moment for a breakthrough—not just in the beaker, but in a student’s self-esteem.
Our students have faced challenges that make traditional classrooms feel like a minefield. Your job is to make the Science lab a sanctuary of curiosity. You will lead small groups (typically 8 students) delivering a creative curriculum that prioritises engagement, safety, and those ‘lightbulb moments’ that our young people deserve.
The role:
- Delivering KS3 and KS4 Science (including GCSE or Functional Skills) to students with diverse EHCPs.
- Using trauma-informed practices to de-escalate behaviour and build trust before building circuits.
- Creating ‘hands-on’ lessons that keep students engaged without feeling overwhelmed.
- Working alongside therapists and support staff to ensure every child’s emotional needs are met alongside their academic goals.
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work here (though it helps if you know how they work). You need to be a person who doesn't give up on a student when they have a bad day!
Our setting:
Melbury College is a partnership that includes Melrose School, Primary and Secondary Campuses (Special School for pupils with SEMH), Canterbury Campus (Secondary PRU), Lavender Campus (Medical) and Whatley Campus (ASD/ SpLD)
All of our pupils have an EHCP and have historically experienced significant barriers to learning in mainstream education. At Melrose, we offer a GCSE pathway which is adapted and delivered in a way that meets both the learning needs but also the emotional readiness of our pupils. You will need to be a resilient and dynamic teacher who has a strong commitment to personalised learning and who can promote a positive school culture. Candidates should have:
- an excellent teaching record
- experience of the use of restorative practices and effective behaviour management skills
- ability to monitor and review through self-evaluation, report writing and a clear system of record keeping
- ability to teach flexibly, innovatively and responsively in a challenging environment
- evidence of the ability to successfully manage and support pupils with SEMH
- the ability to plan and deliver outstanding teaching and learning for both individuals and small groups with high quality outcomes for all pupils
- Possesses a ‘thick skin’ and a warm heart—resilience is non-negotiable.

At Melrose, we cater for pupils with social, emotional, mental health needs and many have additional challenges and diagnoses and present with difficulties in social communication and emotional regulation. We pride ourselves on the specialist support and nurturing environment we offer which enables pupils to access tailored support and learning so that each young person is able to engage positively in education and fulfil their potential.
Within our Primary provision, we have four mixed-aged classes. Each class has a teacher and two teaching assistants with class sizes of around six pupils. All pupils access the National Curriculum which is adapted and delivered creatively to support learner engagement. Specialist SALT and OT provision is integrated into the primary curriculum. In Year 7, we run a ‘nurture class’ which bridges the transition from primary into secondary education. This runs similar to a primary model where pupils are taught for the majority of the school day by one teacher in their classroom with some specialist teaching throughout the week. From Year 8 onwards, pupils work in tutor groups and access specialist teacher across the week, moving around the school. Class sizes in Secondary are around six pupils with a teaching assistant supporting each lesson. At Secondary, pupils access a GCSE pathway which is supported with a vocational offer at Key Stage 4. Across the school we provide ‘Social Development Opportunities’ which offer structured enrichment activities to develop skills such as teamwork and resilience. The work across our school is underpinned by our trauma-informed practices.
