Science Technician job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is interested in science to join the school. This post is a vital role in the school and allows our students to learn scientific principles via practical work and using excellently prepared resources.

The successful applicant will join our Science Department and help to deliver the practical equipment and resources for students ranging from Year 7 to A-level. Through prepared demonstrations and equipped class practical’s, the students are enthused about the world of Science and its principles.

Our ideal candidate must have;

  • Be able to work under pressure and to deadlines, and produce accurate results
  • The ability to plan and organise tasks effectively
  • The ability to use IT

Responsibilities:

  • To prepare materials and samples for class work and to assemble materials for cataloguing and stocktaking.
  • To support teachers and students in practical lessons and were authorised to do so by a member of teaching staff, to demonstrate the safe and effective use of equipment and activities to students.
  • To prepare cultures, plates, solutions and models in accordance with specified procedures.
  • To maintain plants and aquaria within the Science Faculty.
  • To make sure laboratories and prep rooms are kept in a clean and organised fashion.
  • To be aware of the appropriate and safe storage of chemicals and always adhere to this.
  • To always understand and follow relevant procedures i.e. Health and Safety.
  • To undertake the preparation and clearing away of apparatus and materials.
  • To ensure that all staff, including teachers, are aware of the dangers of leaving equipment in an unsafe condition i.e. breakages/spillages and to emphasise the danger of not informing the technician(s) immediately when such circumstances arise.
  • In the event of a chemical spillage, to liaise with the Senior Science Technician to ensure laboratory floors, walls, benches, equipment and fittings are cleaned appropriately.
  • To assist with stock taking within the Science Faculty, particularly the annual stock take.
  • To assist with exhibitions and displays for events as appropriate e.g. Open days and parents’ evenings.
  • To assist colleagues to update all relevant classroom notice boards linked to the curriculum area on a regular basis to ensure a stimulating and exciting learning environment for students.
  • To be willing to help support with any science clubs.
  • To assist with the preparation and usage of ICT software and hardware.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Assist with on-the- call duties as appropriate
  • Responsible for student behaviour and welfare in public places during break, lunch, change of lesson, beginning and end of school day as directed
  • Attend meetings as required
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, willingness to develop additional skills and expertise
  • Keep up to date with current educational developments and legislation affecting your area of responsibility
  • Contribute to school development through identified communication and consultation channels
  • Treat students, parents and colleagues fairly, equitably and with dignity and respect
  • To respect the confidential nature of information relating to the school, students and customers
  • Be aware of and support differences and ensure equal opportunities for all
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
  • Develop constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals
  • Be aware of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and report any concerns in accordance with the school’s safeguarding policy
  • To comply with the school’s Health and Safety policy and statutory requirements
  • To undertake any other duties not detailed above commensurate with the level of the post.
