Science Technician job summary

Science Technician

Are you passionate about science and enjoy creating engaging learning opportunities for young people?

We are looking for a confident, organised and enthusiastic Science Technician to join our successful Science team.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a dedicated team supporting the delivery of practical science across ages 11-18. You will play an important role behind the scenes, ensuring teachers and students have the equipment, materials and resources they need to make practical lessons engaging, safe and successful.

Working hours

Monday-Thursday: 7.30am-3:30pm
Friday: 7.30am-3:00pm

The role is 37 hours per week, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break each day.

What will you be doing?

As a Science Technician, you will help ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the Science Department. Your role will include:

  • Preparing, organising and setting up equipment, materials and resources for practical science lessons.
  • Supporting teachers and students during practical activities where required.
  • Collecting, cleaning, maintaining and safely storing scientific equipment and resources.
  • Ensuring practical resources are available and ready for lessons.
  • Keeping equipment and resources organised and identifying opportunities to improve the department's provision.
  • Supporting the department with health and safety, ensuring practical activities are carried out safely and in line with relevant guidance.
  • Keeping up to date with developments in practical science, equipment and resources.
  • Working closely with teachers, technicians and other colleagues to support high-quality teaching and learning.
  • Contributing positively to the wider life and ethos of the school.
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people in accordance with school policies and procedures.
About you

We are looking for someone who is practical, proactive and enjoys working as part of a team. You will be confident communicating with both colleagues and young people and will take pride in ensuring everything is prepared and ready to go.

Previous experience as a Science Technician would be desirable, as would knowledge of science health and safety requirements, but we are also keen to hear from individuals who have relevant practical experience and a genuine willingness to learn and develop.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience or knowledge of working within a science or practical environment.
  • Good organisational skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • A good understanding of science practical work and relevant health and safety requirements.
  • The ability to prioritise tasks and work effectively under pressure.
  • Good IT and communication skills.
  • The ability to build positive and professional relationships with colleagues and students.
  • A proactive approach and the ability to use your own initiative.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to contribute to the wider school community.
Why join us?

You will be joining a dedicated and supportive Science team where your contribution will have a direct impact on students' learning experiences.

This is a varied and hands-on role, ideal for someone who enjoys being active, organised and involved in the practical side of science. You will have opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills through training and professional development, while working alongside experienced colleagues.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who believes that, with the right support and opportunities, every young person can achieve their very best.

If you are enthusiastic about science, enjoy working with young people and want to play an important role in supporting inspiring practical learning, we would love to hear from you.
