About the role

​The Science department are seeking an enthusiastic and conscientious individual, with a passion for research and development within education. The technician will support the department in bringing to life the practical elements of the curriculum, to enrich our students with their transformational journey beyond education. We are a very supportive department, who work hard to support professional development and this role could be a fantastic opportunity for those considering a career in education, or laboratory-based roles.

Job purpose

To support the planning and delivery of a safe and engaging science curriculum through the preparation and delivery of practical science resources, under the guidance of the Senior Science Technician and Head of Science.

Main duties and responsibilities

To assist the Senior Science Technician in coordinating the use of, and development of, practical resources and facilities, including the provision of guidance and support in meeting the practical requirements of the science curriculum, including liaising with all areas of the school and outside organisations.

Assist in delivery of practical aspects of lessons, e.g. delivery of a practical demonstration or supporting during a class practical, ensuring practical resources are arranged in such a way as to make the practical run as smoothly as possible e.g. individual trays per group with required equipment already sorted.

Support with relevant afterschool events e.g. Yr 6 open evenings’

Be responsible for the management and control of science resources. This includes, but is not exclusively, maintaining an up-to-date inventory, arranging purchase orders for stock before it runs out, keeping financial records of departmental expenditure, suggesting alternative practical’s to reduce resources used unnecessarily.

Ensure all relevant paperwork is maintained for the radioactive sources in tandem with the school radiation protection supervisor if this is not the senior science technician

Take a proactive approach in your own CPD, highlighting areas of interested and further development through line management and keeping up to date with mandatory whole school training

Attend regular meetings with the technician team to share updates, determine workflow, concerns etc.

Attend one whole department meeting per half term to provide updates to the teaching team.

Keeping up to date with current procedures and recommendations from CLEAPSS

Ensure the Health & Safety and well-being of pupils in the classroom, staff and technicians by assessing risks in planned and day-to-day activities and reducing any risks to an acceptable level. Inform teaching staff of safer alternatives they could carry out to achieve the same learning where possible.

To take an active part in meetings, where appropriate, making a positive contribution and supporting the academy policies and good practice i.e. in staff meetings, parents evening and training events.

Any other activities, which reasonably match the level of responsibility for the post and are within the guidance given in the schoolteachers pay and conditions document and The Education (Specified Work and Registration) (England) Regulations 2003.

Other Responsibilities

Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person

Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school

Appreciate and support the role of other professionals

Attend relevant meetings as required

Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required, including First Aid Training [CLEAPSS/FAW].

Treat all users of the school with courtesy and consideration

Present a positive personal image, contributing to a welcoming school environment which support equal opportunities for all

Comply with health and safety policies and procedures at all times and undertake risk assessments as appropriate.

Promote and ensure the health and safety of pupils, staff & visitor (in accordance with appropriate health & safety legislation) at all times.

To show a record of excellent attendance and punctuality.

To adhere to the Academy’s Dress Code & Staff Code of Conduct.

Undertake supervision duties as allocated, which may take place before, during and after school including break and lunchtime.



This job description will be supported by the school improvement plan which will identify key distinct tasks and responsibilities for this role in the school year. These will be derived from ongoing school self-evaluation and other local/national priorities. The postholder’s duties must be carried out in compliance with the school’s policies and procedures including child protection and safeguarding procedures.
