The Science Department

As a Science Technician, you will work closely with our Lead Science Technician and teaching staff to:

Prepare and organise chemicals, equipment, and apparatus

Support KS3-5 practical activities, demonstrations, and experiments, including for A Level and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Maintain laboratories, prep rooms, and stock levels

Ensure compliance with health and safety procedures (CLEAPSS guidance, risk assessments)

Contribute to the smooth daily running of a busy department

Job description

Practical Science and Technical Support

Prepare, set up and dismantle practical experiments, demonstrations and investigations for GCSE, A-level and IB Science, in consultation with teaching staff and WMAT Lead Science Technician.

Demonstrate and assist with practical activities where appropriate and within the requirements of the role.

Ensure that apparatus, equipment, chemicals, specimens and other materials are prepared accurately, efficiently and safely for lessons.

Provide responsive technical support to teachers and students during practical lessons and activities.

Anticipate practical requirements and work proactively with teachers to ensure lessons are fully prepared and run smoothly.

Provide technical advice and guidance to science staff and, where appropriate, non-specialist teachers, cover supervisors and trainees.

Contribute ideas and expertise to the development of practical resources and activities across the Science Department.

Support the department in maintaining high-quality displays and practical learning environments.

Health, Safety and Compliance

Maintain the highest standards of health and safety within laboratories, preparation areas and storage facilities.

Follow health and safety procedures, statutory requirements and relevant CLEAPSS guidance.

Ensure appropriate safety information, hazard labels and risk-control measures are in place and clearly communicated.

Safely store, handle and dispose of chemicals, biological materials and other laboratory waste in accordance with relevant procedures.

Dispose of or reclaim hazardous and non-hazardous laboratory materials appropriately.

Regularly check equipment and apparatus for safety, functionality and suitability for use.

Identify, report and, where appropriate, repair faults or damage to equipment.

Maintain accurate records relating to equipment, chemicals, materials, servicing and safety as required.

Contribute to a culture in which safety is understood as a shared responsibility and consistently high standards are maintained.

Stock, Resources and Laboratory Management

Monitor departmental stock levels and ensure that essential resources are available when required.

Assist with the ordering, receipt, storage, issue and distribution of equipment and materials.

Check deliveries against orders and invoices and promptly raise any discrepancies or queries.

Maintain accurate inventories of apparatus, equipment, chemicals and other resources.

Organise and maintain laboratories, preparation rooms, stores and other departmental spaces to a high standard.

Ensure resources are stored safely, logically and efficiently, making effective use of available space.

Undertake specialist purchasing and sourcing of scientific equipment and materials as required.

Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, sustainability and cost-effectiveness of departmental resources.

Support positive student behaviour and model the standards of professionalism.

Supervise a whole class in an emergency situation, where required and appropriate.

All staff have a responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The postholder will follow current statutory requirements and WMAT procedures relating to health and safety. The postholder will immediately notify the College of any circumstances that may affect their eligibility to maintain the required DBS clearance.

Person Specification

Essential

Relevant qualification or equivalent experience in science, laboratory science, science technology or a related discipline.

Appropriate knowledge and understanding of laboratory health and safety.

Willingness to undertake relevant professional development and specialist training.

A relevant Level 3 qualification or higher in a science-related subject.

Desirable

Specific laboratory technician or school science technician training.

Training or experience relevant to CLEAPSS guidance and laboratory safety.

Knowledge or experience of supporting practical work at post-16 level.
