Science Technician job summary

At Yate Academy, we're looking for a proactive Science Technician to work alongside our teaching staff, preparing practical experiments, maintaining laboratory equipment and helping ensure every lesson runs smoothly and safely.

About the Role

As a Science Technician, you will support the delivery of engaging and practical science lessons by preparing equipment, materials and resources for experiments, maintaining laboratories and ensuring high standards of health and safety are followed.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is organised, enjoys practical work and has a passion for science. You'll become part of a supportive team where your expertise and attention to detail will help create inspiring learning experiences and make a real difference to pupils every day.

Key aspects of the role include:

    • To co-ordinate the day-to-day organisation and development of resources across biology, chemistry and physics
    • To contribute to the design, development and maintenance of specialist resources and/or long-term projects.
    • To ensure the availability of suitable materials and equipment, compiling orders and liaising or negotiating with suppliers and finance departments. This will include sourcing, costing and suggesting economic alternatives to maintain stock levels.
    • Keeping accurate up-to-date stock records.
    • To ensure that both routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing and repairing of equipment are carried out to the required standard.
    • Preparing equipment of laboratory classes in accordance with given instructions, CLEAPSS and AQA practical guidance.
    • Servicing, testing, routine maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment.
    • Provide advice and guidance to staff and students on basic technical issues.
    • Support staff and students in the classroom environment to assist in the learning process where appropriate.
    • Maintaining science classrooms and the prep room to ensure a clean, safe and orderly environment.

      We're Looking For Someone Who:

      • Able to monitor supplies of resources and equipment and order more when required.
      • Communicates clearly, both written and orally and able to undertake clerical and administrative tasks and maintain accurate records.
      • Able to work independently, use own initiative and also work constructively as part of a team.
      • A passion and desire to drive things forward.
      • Be dependable, able to follow instructions and respond to management directions.
      • Good understanding of Health & Safety.
      • Behaviour management skills.
