What skills and experience we're looking for

You are an ambitious, visionary, and passionate Drama teacher with leadership capacity or clear aspirational potential to step into middle leadership as Second in Department. As a dynamic classroom practitioner, you have a proven track record or strong capability in teaching across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5, including either GCSE Drama, A Level Drama, and Level 2 BTEC Performing Arts across Acting and Production Arts streams. Whether your core strength lies in performance or in technical theatre and production skills, you bring creative flair, exceptional subject knowledge, and high expectations to every classroom.

TLR 2.1 – Second in Charge of Drama/Production Arts

CURRICULUM AREA

Job Purpose: To support the HOD in providing leadership and strategic direction and to develop and support the Drama team to ensure excellent outcomes for staff and students.

Teaching and Learning

● maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the curriculum area including all statutory requirements to provide a curriculum that is appropriate to the needs of all students

● to support the Head of Department in developing a strategic vision for the department

● completion, monitoring and evaluating SoW to ensure that the curriculum is appropriately adapted to meet the needs of all students

● promotion of all national/local strategies and priorities within the curriculum area

● provision of an enhancement curriculum (trips/visits/intervention sessions)

● to formulate, communicate and monitor the progress of the curriculum improvement plan to ensure it makes a significant contribution to the SIP

Student Outcomes

● to analyse and monitor the performance of students within the department to ensure that all students are reaching their potential and developing a range of intervention strategies as appropriate accountable to the Headteacher and Governing Body for the development and implementation of student performance across the department to make a measurable contribution to whole school targets as appropriate

● to ensure the well-being and personal development of all students

Leadership

● to foster a shared vision in the curriculum team which reflects the whole school vision

● to work with the Head of Department to lead, manage and support the team of teachers who deliver Drama at all key stages and provide support and motivation across the Department

● delegation of roles within the department

● leading on the training of all staff in the department to develop and enhance their teaching practice (including coaching and mentoring)

● completion and monitoring of appraisal

● organising department meetings to ensure the efficient and effective running of the department

● to review and report on the standards of teaching and learning in the department in line with the school self evaluation policy

● to ensure all school policies are consistently implemented

Resources

● to be responsible for generating an ambience and environment in the department and the immediate area that is conducive to learning

● complete risk and other assessments as required

● to deploy staff efficiently and effectively in the department

Extra curricular

● lead, design, and organise a vibrant program of extra-curricular Drama/Production clubs, educational theatre trips, and large-scale school productions

Liaison

● representing the department at relevant meetings

● liaising with relevant staff in respect of individual student need (including referrals)

● to prepare and provide regular progress checks to the SLT, Governors, parents as appropriate

● to contribute to the development of whole school policy
