What skills and experience we're looking for

An enthusiastic individual who is well organised and committed to contributing to the quality of education at the college.

Someone who can provide creative education that engages and inspires young people to learn in a range of environments.

A teacher who has a good range of teaching strategies and can apply them in a differentiated approach.

You must have:

- A teaching qualification and/ or QTLS

- Experienced SEN specialist primary teacher, ages 7 – 11-year-olds

- Ability to meet the Teachers’ Standards

- Experience of teaching SLD and young people whose behaviour can challenge others

- Be able to teach to a curriculum that is designed and planned to prepare young people for Adulthood

- Be able to plan and support learning in the community

- Contribute and promote the learner voice

- Be able to offer specific subject knowledge and the ability to imbed English and maths in lessons

- Ability to apply technology skills

-Ability to work as part of a team

-Excellent communication skills, resilience, and professionalism

St. John’s is a charity which comprises of a non-maintained special school, an independent specialist college and residential provision that support young people with autism from the age of 7 to 25yrs. All of the young people have complex needs the majority of whom also have learning disabilities. Some of our learners have co-occurring conditions such as epilepsy, hearing or visual impairments, or mental health needs. We also support autistic learners who have an additional profile of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) syndrome. We have a team consisting of teachers, tutors, education and residential support workers, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, nurses, PBS practitioners, assistant psychologists, and more, to support us in our holistic approach to development.
Each learner’s curriculum is shaped by their individual strengths, interests, and challenges. St. John’s is awarded with Autism Accreditation by the National Autistic Society (NAS). We support our learners to develop their skills in the NAS’s four focus areas of:
- Difference in social communication and interaction
- Self-reliance and problem-solving
- Sensory
- Emotional Well-being
