SEN Teaching Assistant job summary

Education & Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths (usually grade 4/C or above)
  • A relevant qualification (desirable but not always required), such as:
  • Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification
  • CACHE or NVQ in Supporting Teaching & Learning
  • Safeguarding training (often provided by the school)

Experience

  • Experience working with children aged 5-7 (Key Stage 1)
  • Experience supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) such as:
  • Autism (ASD)
  • ADHD
  • Speech and language difficulties
  • Experience in a school is highly valued

Main Duties

  • Support pupils 1:1 or in small groups with learning activities
  • Help children with reading, writing, phonics, and maths
  • Adapt lessons to meet individual needs
  • Support children with behaviour, emotions, and social skills
  • Use positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques
  • Assist during playtime, lunchtime, and transitions
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO
  • Monitor and record pupil progress and behaviour
  • Create a safe, inclusive environment for all pupils

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individualised support so pupils can access learning
  • Help pupils develop confidence and independence
  • Support children with communication difficulties or complex needs
  • Follow safeguarding and school policies at all times

  • Patient, calm, and caring attitude
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to manage behaviour
  • Flexible and proactive approach
  • Experience with children or SEN (preferred)
