Senior Early Years Educator job summary

In conjunction with the teacher and under the agreed educational plan, to plan and  implement an appropriately balanced high quality early years curriculum whilst providing a caring, safe and welcoming environment for children which will allow each child to develop at their own rate in accordance with the Curriculum Development Framework Document.  

Responsibility for pupils:

  • Ensure the physical and emotional wellbeing, safety and security of all children in the setting, in line with safeguarding and welfare requirements.

  • Support children’s personal, social and emotional development, including the promotion of positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies.

  • Provide a nurturing, inclusive and enabling environment that supports each child’s individual needs, including those with SEND or EAL.

  • Promote children’s independence and resilience through consistent routines, high expectations, and warm interactions.

  • Build effective relationships with parents/carers, keeping them informed of their child’s progress and wellbeing.

Teaching, learning and assessment:

  •  Work alongside teachers and other professionals to implement a high-quality, developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the EYFS.

  • Take a lead role in delivering planned activities, adapting these to meet the individual learning and developmental needs of children.

  • Contribute to observational assessment, recording and reporting systems, and use this to inform next steps in learning.

  • Support the preparation of learning environments, both indoors and outdoors, ensuring resources are engaging, purposeful and accessible.

  • Promote language-rich interactions and model high-quality communication throughout daily routines and activities.

Responsibility for staff:

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to other early years staff working within the provision, including Teaching Assistants or support staff.

  • Model best practice and support colleagues to develop their skills, particularly in the implementation of routines and behaviour expectations.

  • Take responsibility for leading the setting in the absence of the class teacher or HLTA, including oversight of daily routines and deployment of staff.

  • Support with the induction and mentoring of new staff or volunteers, under the direction of the class teacher or EYFS lead.

  

Responsibility for budget:

  • No direct budget management responsibility, but may make recommendations for resources or consumables required for the effective running of the provision.

  

Responsibility for physical resources:

  • Maintain a clean, safe and stimulating physical environment that reflects the curriculum and promotes child-led learning.

  • Take responsibility for the organisation, care and storage of physical resources, ensuring materials are fit for purpose and well-maintained.

  • Support the preparation and rotation of learning environments, ensuring they are inclusive, accessible and reflect current learning themes.

  

Main Activities  

  

Curriculum Support

  • Assist in the planning and delivery of high-quality learning experiences that are engaging, inclusive, and aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

  • Adapt and tailor activities to meet the developmental needs of individual children, including those with SEND or additional needs.

  • Support the use of continuous provision and enhancements that reflect children’s interests and current learning themes.

  • Prepare and organise learning materials and resources to support child-initiated and adult-led learning, both indoors and outdoors.

Support for Children

  • Build warm, secure relationships with children, promoting emotional wellbeing, confidence and independence.

  • Observe, assess and record children's progress, contributing to individual learning journeys and target setting.

  • Support children with personal care, transitions and routines, always maintaining dignity and respect.

  • Foster a calm and purposeful atmosphere by modelling and reinforcing positive behaviour strategies.

  • Respond sensitively and effectively to children’s interests and needs, using high-quality interactions to extend learning.

Support for Teacher/Team

  • Work closely with the class teacher and other team members to deliver a consistent and collaborative approach to teaching and care.

  • Contribute to team planning, meetings and reflection, sharing insights and ideas to support ongoing development.

  • Provide mentoring and role-modelling to less experienced staff, including Teaching Assistants, apprentices and volunteers.

  • Take responsibility for leading the setting in the absence of the teacher early years lead, ensuring continuity of routines and quality of provision.

Support to the School/Service

  • Uphold and promote the values and ethos of the school and wider Multi Academy Trust, modelling professionalism at all times.

  • Assist with the delivery of events such as parent workshops, open days, or community projects linked to the Early Years curriculum.

  • Contribute to the evaluation and development of early years provision, including feedback on what’s working well and areas for improvement.

  • Comply with school policies and procedures, including those relating to safeguarding, health and safety, and equality of opportunity.
