Extend Learning Academies Network (ELAN) is looking for a dedicated and proactive Site Maintenance Operative (School Caretaker) to join our Central Estates Team, supporting a number of schools across Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding area.

Salary: £23,110.89 - £25,423.12 (dependent on qualifications and experience)

Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday, all year round

Contract: Permanent

This varied and rewarding role is perfect for an experienced caretaker, facilities assistant, maintenance operative, premises officer, handyman, or property maintenance professional who takes pride in creating safe, secure and welcoming environments.

Working across our school sites, you will play a vital role in ensuring our buildings, grounds and facilities remain compliant, well-maintained and operational for pupils, staff and visitors.

All schools are located within a short travelling distance of each other. Access to your own vehicle is essential, and business mileage expenses are reimbursed.

As a Site Maintenance Operative, your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs
  • Undertaking general building maintenance tasks
  • Painting, decorating and basic refurbishment work
  • Basic plumbing, carpentry and minor repairs
  • Conducting health and safety compliance checks
  • Supporting fire safety, legionella monitoring and asbestos awareness procedures
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records and compliance documentation
  • Assisting with site security, including opening and locking school buildings
  • Responding to site emergencies and alarm call-outs where required
  • Supporting cleaning contractors and monitoring cleanliness standards
  • Moving furniture, equipment and undertaking porterage duties
  • Maintaining school grounds, playgrounds and outdoor learning environments
  • Contributing to small maintenance and improvement projects across ELAN schools

Essential Requirements

  • Experience in building, property or facilities maintenance
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures and safe working practices
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Full driving licence and access to your own transport

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Trade qualification such as City & Guilds or equivalent
  • Previous experience working in a school, academy, educational setting, or multi-site facilities environment
  • Knowledge of statutory compliance requirements within premises management
