What skills and experience we're looking for

Due to the current post holder moving to a promoted post, we are looking to appoint an experienced, resilient, patient and enthusiastic English Teacher to lead the delivery of English to GCSE and develop literacy across the school. Other responsibilities will be based on school need and the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking for a new challenge and has a flexible approach, to join a passionate, caring and committed team at The Rubicon Centre.

You will have a track record in raising standards and accountability for the performance of a significant cohort of young people. You will be a confident and effective teacher who can deliver exciting and challenging lessons to classes of up to six students. You will have an empathetic approach, a passion for supporting children with SEMH and SEND and a proven ability to manage challenging behaviour.

Many of our pupils are below national age-related literacy and numeracy levels when they arrive. Your ability to engage children with SEMH and SEND will be essential and understanding of Trauma informed practice would be a distinct advantage.

You will:

  • Be able to teach and plan within a team
  • Be adaptable and proactive; you must be able to react to the events the day could throw at you!
  • Have demonstrated ability to scaffold and differentiate learning within small group settings
  • Ensure students in your care make good progress
  • Be committed to supporting and raising the aspirations of children with SEMH requirements in a small setting
  • Have the flexibility to teach and plan non-core subjects
  • As a Key Tutor, build positive and productive relationships with students, families and other agencies

We are passionate about supporting our students to overcome barriers in learning and life. For children and young people facing barriers to learning through circumstance, learning difficulties and challenging needs, the level of care and education must go above and beyond, and that’s what The Rubicon Centre Team aim to provide.

If you think you have what it takes to be a part of our team and join us in making a difference to our students and their families, we would welcome your application.

For further information about the school please visit the school website or call us on 01609 533951 for an informal chat.

The Rubicon Centre is a Pupil Referral Unit supporting students who for whatever reason struggle to access mainstream settings. The Rubicon Centre is a school judged “good” by Ofsted December 2023. The numbers of students we work with can change on a daily basis, but our maximum number is 30. Students are referred to us from the five secondary schools in the Selby area.  Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds.  Selby has one of the highest levels of need within North Yorkshire.  Our catchment area is approximately a 20 mile radius of Selby Town.  The Rubicon Centre was formed in September 2012 to replace the previous REOTAS provision and we moved into our new building in December 2012 which is a small but well equipped provision to enable small groups of students to make rapid progress.

The Rubicon Centre is a friendly and innovative school situated in the centre of the beautiful County of North Yorkshire, bordering the North York Moors National Park, offering a high quality of life.  Selby is a small market town sixteen miles south of York and close to the M1 and M62. The School is only 10 minutes from the A1, making it easily and quickly accessible from York, Leeds and Hull.

The School offers all employees training and support with the chance to develop skills working with students with social, emotional needs. Employees also benefit from NYC’s Vivup discount Scheme including access to tax free childcare vouchers.

We aspire to develop a real sense of ambition and achievement at the school. Although admission to the school is often based on previous struggles encountered at mainstream schools all our students have a fresh opportunity to change direction and start to achieve. Our school logo “Dream Big, Dare to Succeed” is constantly reinforced through the way we work.
