Speech and Language Therapist job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Trust’s established SEND team as a Speech & Language Therapist. Working three days per week during term time, you will play a vital role in supporting children with speech, language and communication needs across our family of primary schools. 

Working alongside our experienced SENDCos and supporting the Head of Children’s Services, we are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced therapist with a proven track record of delivering high-quality interventions for children with additional communication needs within a primary school setting. 

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to pupils’ educational experiences and outcomes while working as part of a collaborative and supportive multidisciplinary team. 

Main Purpose of the Role 

To provide a high standard of speech and language therapy support, including assessment, intervention and advice for children, parents and staff. This will include contribution to the development of the Trust’s universal SLCN offer, support and training for staff in the delivery of whole school and group SALT programmes. Providing guidance for parents/carers is also part of the role. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Deliver an effective and responsive speech and language therapy service across the Trust 
  • Lead the delivery and training of whole-class and group SLCN interventions 
  • Provide advice regarding NHS SLCN referrals and support staff to deliver NHS programmes 
  • Manage a caseload of children with a range of communication needs if needed in addition to NHS input 
  • Assess pupils with speech, language and communication difficulties and analyse findings to determine the most appropriate interventions 
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate individual and group-based therapy programmes. 
  • Develop, implement and review personalised speech, language and communication programmes, providing accessible guidance and training for school staff and families where appropriate 
  • Use evidence-based practice to support clinical decision-making and maintain high standards of clinical governance and risk management 
  • Contribute to reviews, multi-agency meetings and wider SEND planning, promoting effective partnership working 
  • Liaise with a range of professionals, including educational staff, healthcare practitioners, therapists and other external agencies, to support positive outcomes for pupils 
  • Support transition planning and attend appointments or meetings where required 
  • Contribute positively to the wider work of the Trust and support colleagues as needed 

About You 

We are looking for a qualified and committed professional who has: 

Qualifications 

  • A recognised Degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent). 
  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). 
  • Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT). 
  • A commitment to working within RCSLT clinical guidelines and HCPC professional standards. 

Experience and Skills 

  • Experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist, preferably in schools 
  • Experience supporting children and young people with social communication difficulties and additional communication needs 
  • Experience producing detailed and complex reports 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly to children, families and professionals 
  • The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team 
  • Experience in delivering CPD to individuals and groups would be beneficial 

The successful candidate will be required to travel between our schools and must be able to make their own way between our five Exeter schools, one Exmouth school and one Barnstaple school
