The Role

Are you a dedicated and compassionate educator with a passion for working with secondary-aged students with special educational needs? We are seeking a skilled Special Needs Teacher to deliver tailored education that empowers our students to achieve their full potential. Although we are a secondary school, we operate with a primary education philosophy, where our teachers operate as whole class teachers, delivering the core curriculum to a single group, enabling them to foster deep relationships and consistent support. This also enables our students to benefit from a stable environment and a teacher who truly knows their learning journey, and can build profound connections with their class, delivering a broad curriculum in a single, stable environment.

Our staff are dedicated to providing a supportive, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment for secondary-aged students with special educational needs. We are opening a new site in September in Whetstone, and the successful candidate may be based there or on our main site, dependent on previous experience and expertise. We welcome applications from individuals who:

  • Are an outstanding classroom practitioner, with a solid understanding of primary curriculum requirements and how to adapt for students with SEND;

  • Are "primary hearted" but able to deliver in a secondary setting;
  • Have knowledge and experience of supporting students with a range of needs, such as Autism, severe learning difficulties, physical difficulties or PMLD;

  • Are Dedicated to the welfare, safeguarding, and achievement of every child;

  • Are able to inspire, challenge, and motivate all learners;

  • Are committed to providing exceptional learning experiences;

  • Are passionate about working with students with complex needs, and with familiarity with assistive technologies and alternative communication methods (PODD, Makaton, etc);

  • Are Calm, supportive, and resilient under pressure;

  • Are creative, innovative, and improvement-focused;

  • Are forward-thinking and committed to raising standards;

  • Are organised with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, families and colleagues;

  • Have a commitment to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and Deliver Tailored Lessons: Create engaging and adapted lesson plans that meet the diverse needs and abilities of your students.

  • Support Academic and Personal Growth: Develop students' knowledge, skills, and confidence to help them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

  • Develop and Review Personal Education Plans: Work with teaching assistants, parents, and external professionals to create and evaluate personalised learning goals.

  • Prepare Students for the Future: Focus on life skills, functional learning, and preparation for further education, work related learning, employment, and independence.

  • Monitor and Assess Progress: Regularly track and document student development, adapting teaching methods as needed to support continuous progress.

  • Create a Safe Learning Environment: Foster a positive, inclusive classroom culture that promotes respect, understanding, and a sense of belonging.

  • Collaborate Effectively: Work closely with colleagues, therapists, and other professionals to provide holistic support for your students.

We welcome applications from primary-trained teachers looking to move their practice into secondary age appropriate content and prepare our learners for adulthood, whilst teaching them core functional literacy, numeracy and life skills, or secondary-trained teachers who understand early developmental milestones, special educational needs and crave the deeper pastoral impact of a primary-style classroom. This post is not appropriate for those expecting a traditional secondary education approach or content.
