Welcome

Welcome to Harrogate Grammar School, where we focus on helping each student become the best they can be by providing a positive, inclusive environment in which young people find and develop their strengths.

Our commitment to ‘excellence for all’ is delivered through a broad and balanced curriculum, promoting our REACH values of Respect, Excellence, Adventure, Commitment and Honesty. We dedicate ourselves to three central areas – a culture of respectful relationships, an aspirational and inclusive curriculum and expert teaching. Our teachers benefit from the latest research in cognitive science research, which informs us about ways of ‘making learning stick’ and our students benefit from an engaging curriculum that goes beyond the classroom. All of this is achieved in the context of a culture of respect.

Outside the classroom, students explore their strengths through numerous clubs, sports, trips, and enrichment activities including music lessons, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, charity fundraising, productions, art exhibitions, debating and much more. Students play an active part in the global Eco-Schools programme, for which we were recently awarded Green Flag status. There is a wealth of opportunities for students to learn how to lead such as through Student Council, Senate, Student Leaders and as Head Students. Students enjoy the diversity of our wider curriculum that provides something for each child. Our recent Sixth Form’s Sports Academy Programme, for example, provides rugby and netball players with a pathway into professional sport.

Our drive is to support every young person as they develop as unique individuals by promoting an atmosphere of kindness and mutual respect. Through expert teaching and through a culture of commitment, HGS students make progress significantly above average in both GCSE and A Levels. Our impressive examination results, making us one of the highest performing comprehensive schools in the country, are the positive outcome of our culture of excellence, the dedication of our staff, the commitment of our students and the support of families.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of our students. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Our approach is child-centred and we consider, at all times, what is in the best interest of the child. We have four DSLs (Designated Safeguarding Leads), one of whom is also the Safeguarding Lead for the 13 schools in RKLT. Each of the DSL’s is responsible for a specific key stage group but are on-hand at all times. We are committed to safer recruitment and all of our staff receive regular safeguarding and child protection training.
