What skills and experience we're looking for

Starting from September 2026

The Governors at Reading School are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspiring member of staff to join our Chemistry team from September 2026. We offer an exciting opportunity in an exceptional team and a School that is passionate about Chemistry as a subject.

Our ideal candidate must be passionate about Chemistry and ready to nurture enquiry. This commitment, and a strong Chemistry degree or related background is very important to us.

The Chemistry department is housed within a purpose-built science block. These excellent facilities consist of four Chemistry laboratories, a large well-equipped modern prep room and a teacher’s work area. The department is an innovative, friendly and experienced team, who have worked together for a number of years and we are eager to add fresh ideas and energy to the department.

Our results are outstanding and we always have a large A-level cohort of around 75-80 students per year group, meaning there is always opportunity for A-level teaching. The academic nature of the school also allows the opportunity to offer exciting supra-curricular teaching, extra-curricular activities and the chance to support a large number of medical applications as well as Chemistry related course at elite universities. We are able to offer onsite accommodation in shared staff flat.

At Reading School, we have a clear educational philosophy and a deeply rooted commitment to social mobility. In all we do we seek to nurture character and develop academic excellence, and we know that what we do really matters. More than 10% of our Year 7 students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and we are proud of the difference that we make. In 2026, the school was rated the Sunday Times South East State Secondary School of the Year.

We are a short walk from central Reading and close to transport links. Reading is a diverse place to live with arts, culture and heritage at the heart of the town.
