Teacher of D&T (Food Technology) job summary

Inspire the next generation of leaders at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace

We are seeking an outstanding Teacher of D&T Food Technology to work within our high performing Academy, this position is open to both NQTs and more experienced teachers.

The Design and Technology team at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace is comprised of five members of teaching staff and two technicians. The Department currently delivers a range of focus curriculum areas including Food Preparation and Nutrition, Graphic Products, Resistant Materials and computer science from key stage 3 right the way through until A-level.

High expectations are set within the department for both students and teachers alike. The Design and Technology team are committed to developing the way that they teach, taking on board new initiatives and experimenting with a wide range of teaching styles and strategies. Assessment for Learning is also considered to be of high importance and all staff place heavy emphasis on the consistent implementation of health and safety procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of all who work within the department.

In Key Stage 3 students are taught as part of a ‘carousel’ system, where classes of students rotate around the D&T staff and classrooms every 7 weeks. This system allows students to experience short projects in each of the key areas of the D&T curriculum, whilst being taught in an appropriate environment by a subject specialist. Year 9 is dedicated to skill building thorough a range of practical and theory activities in the chosen area.

At GCSE level, students are examined on two units. Currently the first unit accounts for 50% of the final grade and is based around a practical activity and a comprehensive design portfolio. The second unit provides the remaining 50% of the total GCSE grade and this is assessed by way of an hour and a forty-five minute written examination sat at the end of Year 11. Theory lessons are taught throughout years 9, 10 and 11 in order to prepare students for the examination; intervention sessions are provided regularly outside of lesson time to support both the examination and coursework.

Professional development of staff is promoted and supported. Performance Management targets are set and training opportunities identified and all staff are involved in the Academy Improvement Planning and review process. The department benefits from the very latest teaching and learning strategies and strives to ensure that all teachers are expert practitioners in their field.

The Design and Technology department believes firmly in delivering a curriculum that prepares young people for the technological challenges of tomorrow. We strive to deliver traditional skills alongside the use of some of the most modern and up to date materials/ ingredients, equipment and processes available. The team continually looks to update its schemes of work in order to stay abreast of new and emerging technologies and ensure that learning is engaging and relevant to the 21st century.

We can offer you the opportunity to advance your career within a supportive academy environment. You will be part of a Federation established in developing practitioners and nurturing excellent future leaders, with unrivalled opportunities for progression; whatever your aspirations as a teacher, middle or senior leader, our Teaching School Alliance provides a range of bespoke courses and qualifications, including our Aspiring Leaders NPQML and NPQSL programmes to help you achieve your ambitions more quickly.
