What skills and experience we're looking for

We are looking for a Teacher of Design and Technology: Food Preparation and Nutrition, who can deliver engaging practical and theory lessons, support pupils to achieve well, and help shape Food Preparation and Nutrition across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. This would suit a teacher who values Food as both a practical and academic subject, and who wants pupils to leave school with useful practical skills, sound subject knowledge and confidence in the kitchen.

Food Preparation and Nutrition is a valued and well established part of the curriculum at Penwortham Priory Academy. Pupils study Food in each year of Key Stage 3, developing practical cooking skills, nutritional understanding, knowledge of ingredients, food provenance, food science and safe working practices. At Key Stage 4, Food Preparation and Nutrition is a popular option choice, with pupils following GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition (AQA).

The role offers the opportunity to shape the subject further, building on established schemes of work, practical routines and strong GCSE uptake. The successful candidate will be able to bring their own subject expertise and ideas, while joining a department where Food already has a secure place in the curriculum.

The Design and Technology Department is housed in its own bespoke building and is well resourced. It includes a dedicated Food Preparation and Nutrition kitchen/classroom, as well as specialist spaces for other areas of the Design and Technology curriculum. The department is supported by a technician who helps with preparation, resources and the smooth running of practical lessons across the department.

The department currently offers GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition (AQA) and NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Engineering. Both subjects are well established, and the department has achieved very successful outcomes over recent years.

Penwortham Priory Academy is a vibrant and ambitious school with a culture of high expectations. We are seeking a teacher who can contribute to a successful Technology department with a strong commitment to practical learning, subject knowledge and pupil achievement.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a committed teacher who is positive, reflective and keen to develop their practice. ECTs are welcome to apply.
  • Be a Food specialist with the ability to deliver engaging practical and theory lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for Food Preparation and Nutrition and for helping pupils develop practical skills, subject knowledge and confidence.
  • Be committed to securing strong progress and positive outcomes for pupils. Inspire, motivate and support pupils of all abilities.
  • Be open to curriculum development and able to respond positively to change.
  • Work collaboratively with staff within the department, across the school and, where appropriate, with our wider family of schools.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school.
  • Be committed to Penwortham Priory Academy’s ethos of high expectations and challenge.
