Subject to experience

What skills and experience we're looking for

WHSB seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic Teacher of Economics. The School welcomes applications from both experienced teachers and graduates looking to train as a teacher.

The post would suit an experienced teacher as it includes the opportunity to take on additional paid Teaching and Learning Responsibilities in the Economics Department, or Pastoral responsibilities for a Year group, for a suitably experienced candidate.

The post would also be suitable for a Graduate with a Degree in Economics, or similar, who is interested in pursuing a teaching qualification. Currently, the School trains teachers through the University of Buckingham's Teacher Apprenticeship route which enables them to obtain a PGCE.

The post would also be suitable for an Early Career Teacher (ECT) in either their first or second year of the Early Career Framework.  ECTs at WHSB follow the ECF training through the National Institute of Teaching. ECTs also benefit from a reduced timetable and a dedicated mentor.

What the school offers its staff

The Economics Department at Westcliff High School for Boys (WHSB) has been a high performing Department for many years. We have consistently achieved outstanding results in Public Examinations. The Department has grown considerably over recent years. There are presently 170 students studying Economics in Years 12 and 13, with a further ten groups (250 pupils) studying the subject in Years 10 and 11.

The Economics Department also plays an important role in the extra-curricular life of the School. The Department offers a variety of additional clubs and competitions which pupils can participate in across Key Stages 4 and 5, aimed at assisting those in need of support or extending the more able. These include The Westcliff Economics Society, The Westcliff Economist, Young Enterprise, Extended Project Qualification and Sixth Form Mentoring.

Results at Advanced Level are outstanding and those who choose to continue their Economics studies at University generally do so at established Universities, including the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

In Summer 2024, 90.6% of candidates at Advanced Level were awarded A*-B grades, with 20.3% achieving A* and 62.5% A*-A. At GCSE, in the Summer of 2024, 63% of candidates were awarded 7-9.
