What skills and experience we're looking for

Lincoln UTC does not usually have any staff vacancies… teaching or non-teaching. We are in the unusual position however, to be advertising for a teacher of engineering (or maths / physics), ideally to join our specialist team in September 2024.The successful candidate will help deliver the mechanics, mathematics and physics theory content to our KS5 engineers. We would welcome applications from experienced members of staff, as well as newly, or recently qualified teachers.

Our specialist engineering department is, as you would expect, very strong… we are, after all, a specialist engineering college. Recently we have invested heavily in specialist technical equipment within the engineering department. In 2023, we received matched funding totalling £485,000. This included: new lathes throughout the department, a fibre laser cutter, advanced welding equipment, a plasma cutter, material testing equipment, and several industry standard CNC machines, robotic arms, and milling machines.

Our specialist subject teachers in computer science and business work hand in hand to support delivery across the curriculum. Our teachers in these areas all support our engineering students extensively at key stage 5, in both technical level engineering and triple engineering.

What the school offers its staff

Lincoln UTC is a unique learning environment. We are a 14 to 18 specialist college for science, technology, engineering, and maths. Most visitors to the college assume (wrongly) that we are either a selective or a fee-paying private school. This misunderstanding initially stems from the stunning buildings we are fortunate enough to work in. Our Victorian, listed building at the front is reminiscent of Hogwarts. To the rear of the site, our state-of-the-art laboratories and workshops are housed in an equally impressive, but contrasting, £9 million new build.

The atmosphere within the college is equally as impressive as the physical learning environment. Our students don’t wear uniform. They all wear business dress. They look like adults, and they behave like adults. This is an unusually calm, purposeful, and respectful learning community.

We have, over the past few years, grown in popularity in the locality and are already operating a substantial waiting list for Sept 2024.

In the last Ofsted inspection, in June 2019 (two good and three outstanding judgements), we were highly praised for our ‘strong and supportive culture and the exceptionally high staff morale’. Pupil behaviour and conduct were described as ‘impeccable’. They went on to say that ‘the behaviour of pupils is outstanding. Pupils have exceptionally positive attitudes towards their learning.’

If you would like to find out more about the college or about this position, please contact the principal designate, Stuart Hamer, for an informal chat on 01522 775990. We would welcome (indeed encourage) visits to the college so that you can see for yourself what we have to offer. Equally, we understand that this is not always possible, and we will not view applications from candidates who have not visited less favourably. To arrange a visit please contact Holly Hardiman-Crust on 01522 775990 or email HR@lincolnutc.co.uk

Closing Date: Noon – Friday 3rd May 2024

This misunderstanding initially stems from the stunning buildings we are fortunate enough to work in. Our Victorian, listed building at the front is reminiscent of Hogwarts. To the rear of the site, our state-of-the-art laboratories and workshops are housed in an equally impressive, but totally contrasting, £9 million new build. The atmosphere within the college is just as impressive as the physical learning environment. Our students don’t wear uniform. They all (right down to Year 10) wear business dress. They look like adults and they behave like adults. This is an unusually calm, purposeful, and respectful learning community.

Lincoln UTC is much smaller than most schools with 400 students, 26 teaching staff and a senior leadership team of just 3 people. The college is always over-subscribed but has no desire to grow beyond its current numbers. As a specialist college we offer fewer subjects than most schools (excelling in the ones that we do) but we do offer students an exceptionally wide range of other (work-related) experiences and opportunities.

When Ofsted inspected the UTC in June 2019 (two good and three outstanding judgements), they commented on the ‘strong and supportive culture and the exceptionally high staff morale’. Pupil behaviour and conduct were described as ‘impeccable’. They went on to say that, ‘the behaviour of pupils is outstanding. Pupils have exceptionally positive attitudes towards their learning.’
