What skills and experience we're looking for

The college is seeking to employ an enthusiastic and highly motivated Teacher of English to cover maternity leave. We are looking for a teacher with the skills, expertise and passion to join our team of dedicated staff to provide an inspiring and supportive learning environment to encourage every student to realise their full potential.

You will be committed to ensuring students make their very best progress, through planning and delivering engaging lessons that will inspire our learners to succeed. You will support, challenge, and engage a diverse cohort of students, enriching their learning experience, maximising their potential and raising attainment. This post is equally suitable for experienced teachers and newly qualified teachers with talent and a drive for promoting English across the school.

Like all our highly respected team, you will have the opportunity to teach the full range of ages and qualifications. It’s important we get the right candidate who shares our belief, that our students deserve the very best. Therefore, the successful candidate will:

  • be a highly successful teacher, who embodies our school mission statement, ‘Ambition for All’
  • be highly motivated and demonstrate an ability to learn
  • be able to support the development of highly engaging and ambitious schemes of work within the department
  • have a clear understanding of pedagogical knowledge in the teaching of English
  • be a team player and relish in the opportunity to work with colleagues within the English department and beyond

What the school offers its staff

The City of Leicester College sits at the heart of the East Leicester community and has many staff who attended here as students, including Senior and Middle leaders. We pride ourselves on our cultural diversity and inclusive attitudes and beliefs. Our thriving 11-19 college, with around 1750 students on roll, includes a highly successful sixth form of around 350 students. Whilst we are the largest school in the city, we maintain a distinct community identity and prioritise the health and wellbeing of our staff and students alike. In recent years, we have made huge changes to ensure that ambition sits at the heart of everything we do. The changes we have made to curriculum, behaviour and personal development programs have seen us deliver the best exam results we have ever had by some considerable margin.

For the successful candidate we can offer you:

  • a challenging, rewarding inner-city multi-cultural, multi-faith community
  • a school where we are truly ambitious for the community that we serve
  • a supportive and purposeful induction programme for all staff including mentoring and coaching
  • evidence driven and research informed CPD that is tailored to your teaching practice
  • a fantastic, well-resourced inspiring learning environment
  • committed, enthusiastic, creative staff and students
  • a friendly and supportive working environment where staff work as a team to deliver student success
  • access to excellent technology resources, including laptops for all staff

The City of Leicester College is a vibrant and popular 11–19 school with a commitment to the highest level of pastoral care and academic achievement. We are a truly comprehensive multi-cultural school offering unique opportunities for all students.

Our ‘motto’ Ambition for All reflects our aim to challenge every member of our community to be the best they can be, in every aspect. This motto is underpinned by our four Character Pillars; Intellectual, Moral, Community and Performance. You can find out more about our Character Pillars on our Ethos and Values page of our website, but we have found time and again that this program develops academically able students who have the courage to take the opportunities that come their way while being kind to those around them. This success is shown in our examination results and fantastic character of our students.

We have an extremely diverse community and respect, civility and honesty are at the heart of what makes The City of Leicester College such a wonderful place to work and to learn. Students and staff from all backgrounds can come and have their differences respected and their contributions valued. Student success is numerous and varied; from young sports men and women performing at national level, to academic brilliance gaining places at the Oxbridge Universities. Students excel in the arts, which we are passionate about and see as essential to developing the whole person.

We are delighted that you have taken an interest in the school and invite you to visit us to experience the life of the school first hand.
