What skills and experience we're looking for

The post offers flexibility for the right candidate for full or part time and the option to teach some Drama could be considered.

English is a highly valued and popular subject at the School. Colleagues enjoy working closely with a team of specialist teachers and highly motivated and well behaved students. The department have enjoyed strong academic success over a prolonged period of time. At GCSE in 2019 and in 2022 students achieved progress scores of 0.5. At post 16 in 2022, 92% of A Level English Literature grades were A*-B.

Our students are highly motivated and creative, making teaching English at King’s a stimulating and rewarding experience. In the Sixth Form, many students choose to study English Literature or English Literature and Language at A Level. A considerable number of students progress to undertaking degrees at university underpinned by their studies in A Level English.

Outside of the classroom the team provide a wide range of support and opportunities for students including the Oundle Balloon Debate, Literary Society, Poetry Society, as well as visits from authors and trips to the theatre to see performances of set texts. The team are experienced, yet reflective, and they are always looking to develop and enhance their practice, especially focusing on how challenging concepts are modelled and explained and how learners’ understanding is checked and reviewed.

Our English curriculum is continually evolving to reflect both the diversity of the school community and teacher specialisms and passions, and our central focus is the interdependence of reading and writing – the way in which wide and fluent reading can inform engaging and confident writing.

What the school offers its staff

The King’s (The Cathedral) School is a very special place to work educating children from seven years old through to eighteen. The School has an incredibly strong reputation in the area and is one of a very small number of state Schools that has retained close links to the Cathedral dating all the way back to 1541. The School is heavily oversubscribed, staff retention is very high, and staff will typically choose to send their own children to the school for their education. The School places a real emphasis on students achieving well academically alongside participating in a wide range of sporting, musical and leadership opportunities.

Further details about the role

The English Department is located in its own suite of well-resourced classrooms and a staff workroom; all classrooms are equipped with projectors, interactive whiteboards and computers. We maintain strong links with the Library – all Key Stage 3 students have one 35 minute reading lesson per fortnightly cycle, and have the chance to regularly visit the Library to choose books. There are many competitions both within the department and organized by the Librarian, and we have regular visits from authors. We use the Accelerated Reader programme to gauge and track reading ability in Year 7 and 8 students, and work closely with Learning Support to ensure provision for struggling readers, as well as ensuring challenge and opportunity for students who are confident and fluent in their reading.

Commitment to safeguarding

The King’s (The Cathedral) School fully recognises the responsibility it has under section 175 of the Education
Act 2002 (as amended), the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009 (as amended) and Education
and Training (Welfare of Children) Act, 2021 to have arrangements in place to safeguard and promote the
welfare of children.
