What skills and experience we're looking for
Full-time, fixed-term (maternity cover). Required for September 2026
The Governors of this exceptional Grammar School wish to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Teacher of English to cover a period of maternity leave. This is a full-time, fixed-term post for 12 months. The ability to teach English across Key Stages 3 and 4 is essential, and the ability to teach at A-level would be advantageous. A strong degree in English or a closely related discipline is sought.
The English department at WKGS is a successful and collaborative team committed to delivering engaging and academically rigorous lessons that develop students’ reading, writing and analytical skills. The department benefits from strong uptake at both GCSE and A-level, offering English Literature, English Language and Film Studies within a broad and ambitious Sixth Form curriculum.
The successful candidate will be dedicated to delivering high-quality teaching and learning while contributing positively to the continued development of the department.
We are seeking an individual who is passionate about English and committed to helping students develop a love of literature alongside the ability to write with clarity, precision and sophistication. The ability to bring clear explanations, strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject is highly desirable. The successful candidate will join a supportive team and teach highly motivated students who take pride in their academic work.
This post would be equally well suited to an experienced practitioner or an Early Career Teacher (ECT), for whom we offer extensive support, mentorship and development opportunities. We are committed to professional growth and provide a supportive environment in which all teachers can thrive.
Students study English across Key Stages 3 and 4 through a challenging and carefully sequenced curriculum that develops strong reading, writing and analytical skills. At Key Stage 4, students follow Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature specifications, studying a range of texts that develop both critical understanding and written expression.
At Key Stage 5, the department offers AQA A-level English Literature and English Language, alongside Film Studies (EDUQAS). Students engage in detailed literary and linguistic study, alongside opportunities for independent critical exploration. Students are encouraged to develop sophisticated analytical and evaluative skills, and many progress to study English, Film and related disciplines at leading universities.

A selective, all-girls grammar school with co-educational sixth form, providing Wirral and the wider region with an outstanding education since 1913.
Every student arrives at West Kirby Grammar School with a unique combination of talents, skills and aspirations – it’s our job to help each of our students to discover and nurture theirs.
We do this by providing pupils with a wealth of opportunities and choices, enabling everyone to find out what they enjoy and are good at. We create a caring and supportive environment, whilst at the same time allowing students to solve problems for themselves, ensuring that we develop resilient and enterprising learners.
We don’t believe that anyone is born with fixed abilities and intelligence. With the right teaching, support and motivation, children can grow and thrive in subjects they never considered themselves to be cut out for. And whilst our academic record speaks for itself, we know that students learn and develop both in and out of the classroom. That’s why we offer such a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities, through which pupils develop vital life skills and forge lasting friendships.
Because of all of this, our students leave us equipped to thrive in a complex world, ready to make a positive contribution locally and globally as tomorrow’s leaders.
