What skills and experience we're looking for

Are you a dedicated and highly effective educator committed to raising the achievement of all students within your subject area? Join us as a Teacher, where you will be instrumental in delivering high-quality learning, utilising a range of teaching and learning strategies to ensure student success.

This position requires a professional who is aware of strategies for improving learning, understands curriculum developments, and is creative in finding solutions to enhance student performance.

Outwood Academy Portland’s Humanities department is a hugely popular one within the school, students often comment on how approachable, kind and enthusiastic we are. We consist of 3 geographers, 5 historians and 1 RS specialist; all who love working here and are passionate about securing the best outcomes for our students. We share the Scott corridor, aptly named after the famous Antarctic explorer, and all of the Humanities classrooms are resourced with interactive whiteboards, visualisers and ample storage which will enable you to teach in a variety of ways. In addition to this we share a small workroom with several computers, fridge, freezer and nearly always a selection of snacks! And if snacks and a fridge aren’t what you are looking for, we also have a range of teaching and learning books to support professional development, as well as a selection of subject books and subscriptions to professional organisations such as the Historical Association.

Wellbeing and management of workload is a priority for the department and we work collaboratively whenever possible and often share resources and planning. We all want the best for our students and by sharing expertise and best practices we believe we can achieve this. The amazing Reprographics department is also always available to help with printing and resource making for lessons and this support is invaluable. We help each other whenever we can, which includes support with planning, marking and sometimes even teaching. As a team we share the view that whilst our job is often challenging, we do it because it is hard and because of the positive impact we have on our amazing students day in, day out.

If you have any questions or would like to visit the school, please contact Tina Lakin, Head of Humanities at c.lakin@portland.outwood.com

They welcome steps to make their workload more manageable. Staff morale is positive and they are very proud to be part of the school.’ - Ofsted, November 2024.

We have created an educational environment where staff and students constantly strive to improve; where teachers sharpen their skills and expand their repertoires to deliver an outstanding learning experience; and where teachers, classroom assistants, mentors, tutors, inclusion support assistants and students operate as a seamless team. This enables everybody, staff and students, to not only see but also help fulfil the potential in each other.

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.
