Teacher of Geography job summary

Do you want to join a successful and forward-thinking department who aims to teach an engaging and challenging curriculum where the number of students choosing GCSE and A Level are increasing year on year? If so, an exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a dynamic and inspirational teacher of Geography at this “Outstanding” Catholic School (Section 48 Inspection Oct 2017). St Wilfrid’s is growing in size, from 5 forms of entry (FE) to 6. In September 2021 we introduced Psychology into the GCSE curriculum. GCSE Psychology already has 2 classes in Year 10 and we are hopeful that its popularity will grow as it becomes further embedded. If you want to work in a School where everyone is valued and supported to be the best they can be (both students and staff) then this is the school for you. Please click on the following link or copy to your browser to get a flavour of St Wilfrid’s https://youtu.be/I5REzWqgTe0. As you will see from the link, we have great facilities, great staff and above all, great students! This is a school that wants to be the very best it can be. Do you want to be part of that? This post would be ideal for an Early Career Teacher (ECT), and for anyone who wants to join a school where there may be future opportunities for progression. We really do value our teachers and actively support their professional development. For ECTs, we offer an in-depth programme of support and training based on the Early Careers Framework. We currently have 7 ECTs in their first year of teaching and have already employed 6 for September; this is a place where ECTs thrive! We really do value our teachers and actively support their professional development. You do not need to be a Catholic to work here, indeed many of our staff are not, but a willingness to embrace the ethos of the school is expected. The strength of community at St Wilfrid’s is a strong one based upon mutual respect. The staff work incredibly hard and are prepared to go the extra mile for the students in their charge. Our students are amazing and they contribute enormously to making the school such a welcoming and productive place. Our most recent Section 48 Diocesan Report (October 2017) and our Ofsted Report (January 2018) certainly reinforce this aspect of school life. All potential applicants are invited and encouraged to arrange a visit – we firmly believe you won’t be disappointed! Application by form downloadable from our website https://www.stwilfrids.com/ApplicationForms to include a maximum of 2 pages of supporting statement contained within the form. St Wilfrid’s Catholic School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. St Wilfrid’s has an extremely strong reputation in the community and as such, we are heavily oversubscribed with waiting lists in all year groups. We are a 6-form entry Catholic School but we increased in size to 7 forms of entry in September 2023 and 2024 for Year 7 to take bulge classes to help West Sussex with the demand for secondary places in Crawley. Our VI Form is incredibly popular and we estimate we will have our larges Year 12 cohort this September.

The students love their school and staff love working here. In our most recent Catholic School Inspection, where we were rated “Outstanding”, the inspectors commented that, “the care, compassion and respect demonstrated within the community by students and staff are outstanding features of the school’s Catholic character and culture”.

The quotes below are from staff members who have recently joined us:

“I started my career here at St Wilfrid's and it was the best decision I have made. The school has a strong community from the staff and students. When I leave the building at the end of the day, I only look forward to the next day. Working here St Wilfrid's offers you opportunity to develop your academic pedagogy but also to develop you as a person. It has allowed me to progress in my career, joining as a trainee to now having whole school responsibility. I can simply say, I am very honoured to be working for St Wilfrid's Catholic School.”
Ryan Calver, Business Studies Teacher & Leader of Opportunities

“Working at St Wilfrid’s Catholic School is a truly rewarding experience. The staff here foster a supportive community creating an atmosphere where you feel valued and respected. Resources and ideas are shared for continued professional development and encouragement to enhance our journey and ability as teachers. The St Wilfrid’s community extends beyond the professional realms and together we work to empower students not only academically but also morally and spiritually. The mission of this school is felt in every aspect of school life and creates a sense of unity and collective purpose that makes it a joy to work here. You really feel supported and able to contribute to the development of the students. I genuinely feel so grateful to work here and to wake up every day excited to go work.“
Sophie Patience, History Teacher & House Leader

“The community spirit and energy around St Wilfrid’s is infectious. There is an incomparable buzz around the school! Students are incredible to work with and have a real zest for learning and all staff are approachable and supportive. Having worked here for 3 years, I have been encouraged to take on new opportunities and have had support and guidance in progressing in my career. I am very proud to be part of such a fantastic community of people and would highly recommend it as a workplace!” Emily Zeidler, Deputy SL For MFL & House Leader

Students at St Wilfrid’s make “great” progress overall and leave school ready to make a positive contribution to society.
