Great Western Academy opened in brand new, state-of-the-art facilities in North Swindon in September 2018. The Academy is heavily oversubscribed in all years and has a flourishing sixth form to match.
Our GCSE results have shown the progress made by the large majority of students has been excellent, particularly in English and Maths. We are proud of the results across all departments, with GCSE Maths being exceptionally strong (2024: 61% grade 5+ and 81% grade 4+, with no PP or SEND gap in progress). This demonstrates the successful outcomes that can be achieved by all of our students thanks to the professional dedication from our talented teachers.
The results of our A-level cohorts have also been excellent and enabled 98% of university applicants to take up their offers, including Oxford and Cambridge; students have also secured prestigious apprenticeships with companies such as with Airbus and Rolls Royce. The Maths A-Level results again have been a particular strength with well above average percentage of A*-B results.
Our philosophy of Achievement, Care and Excellence permeates all we do, with Care firmly central to this. We use the phrase “Work Hard, Be Kind” to summarise what we expect of students and to create a culture of positive support where students behave well and are able to thrive, and where they are proactively and effectively safeguarded. We believe firmly that strong outcomes follow from high expectations, high quality teaching, and strong support in terms of behaviour structures and targeted academic and pastoral interventions.
We have created a climate in social sciences where our students are inquisitive, ambitious learners who have the desire to fully explore the diversity our curriculum has to offer, already achieving excellent outcomes. As a result, the Health and Social course has proven to be a popular choice for our ambitious learners. This post offers the opportunity to lead in this subject area and ensure the course becomes fully established.
Great Western Academy aims to radically improve the life chances of every student who attends. Our brand new building and state-of-the-art facilities help us to achieve this, but it is the fantastic team of staff who turn our vision into reality. If you have the proven ability to inspire students in the classroom and beyond then this provides you with an exciting opportunity to further shape your practice and develop your career.
Great Western Academy runs a successful enrichment program for all students from 3.10 to 4.15 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The subjects studied are as diverse as Astronomy, Orchestra, Volleyball, Pokemon and Scrabble. Enrichment broadens and deepens a student’s range of experiences at school and gives them the opportunity to learn with other age groups. All teachers will contribute to the Academy’s enrichment programme for two out of the three terms, with the option of offering intervention in the third (or continuing to offer enrichment), pro-rata if part time. This forms part of their directed hours. It is an opportunity to engage students’ interest in an area of your own interest.
