Applicants do not necessarily need to have a qualification in H&S Care, Child Development and Sociology and related disciplines will be considered.

This is a wonderful opportunity for someone wishing to join an outstanding department and a highly successful school. The role will provide much professional development for the successful candidate, to support further career progression. Unstinting support will be given. If you are would like to discuss this post further, please do not hesitate to contact Danielle Largue, Deputy Headteacher.

St Mary’s is a great place to work and provides excellent job satisfaction, as it is a very supportive environment. We provide excellent CPD for ECTs and recently qualified teachers, as well as on-going training for more experienced teachers. There are opportunities for teachers at all levels to help develop teaching and learning across the school, working collaboratively with teachers from other departments, whether as coaches or researchers. The working environment is, therefore, a very stimulating one for all staff and is an added attraction of this post.

St Mary’s is a very popular school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We enjoy outstanding facilities in a building, which opened in 2011. We joined the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust in June 2020. We are also very popular with parents and are one of the most over-subscribed schools in the North-East. The roll has grown from around 1100 five years ago to over 1450 by September 2025, with 5 main school year groups of around 235-240 and a Sixth Form of approximately 300 students. We expect the Sixth Form to continue to grow in the next couple of years, as strongly academic year groups continue to move into the Sixth Form.

At St Mary’s, H&S Care, Child Development and Sociology are well-established and highly respected departments with excellent results. Recent highlights include:-

• BTEC Health and Social Care students have 83% Distinction* or Distinction grades in 2025, with 94% Merit or better

• 94% of BTEC Children’s Play, Learning and Development students achieved a Merit or better over the last 5 years, with 71% Distinction or better.

• 51% of Sociology students achieved at least a grade B over the last 4 years, with 81% A*-C in 2024

Leadership, teaching and the climate for learning in H&SC, Child Development and Sociology are all outstanding, as they are across the school.

Above all, the Governors wish to appoint a leader with:-

• A clear commitment to nurturing and promoting the school’s distinctive ethos

• A passion for providing the best possible holistic education for all students

• A commitment to maximising achievement through excellence in teaching and learning

• An excellent track record as a classroom teacher
