What skills and experience we're looking for

The WLFS History Department is nationally leading. We have an exceptional academic track record, numerous teachers in the department who are published authors, and our innovative Key Stage 3 curriculum was part of the DfE’s Curriculum Programme. We have consistently excellent uptake at both GCSE and A Level, with almost 100 pupils currently studying either Modern or Medieval History A Level at our Sixth Form. Our track record of getting students into top universities is outstanding, with multiple students each year receiving offers to study History at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Politics is a similarly popular subject at A-level, with two classes running each year. It is an experienced department, with highly engaged students, a large number of who go onto study Politics or International Relations at top Universities each year. Both departments are supportive and collaborative, with lessons centrally planned and resourced as part of our sensible approach to workload.

Key characteristics of the role include:

  • to impart your passion for History and Politics to the pupils you teach, whilst also ensuring their mastery of the subject.
  • To assist the Head of Department in planning and delivering schemes of work for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, and monitoring their effectiveness.
  • Specific experience in teaching Politics at A-level, and a through understanding of the Edexcel Politics A-level course.
  • to monitor the progress of pupils according to the department and school assessment policy.
  • to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the department by taking part in collaborative planning, sharing resources, mentoring and observing teachers, and participating in continuing professional development.
  • to be a form tutor, and work collaboratively with your year group team.
  • to contribute to the wider school life, such as events, trips, and co-curricular clubs.

The successful candidate will have:

  • strong subject knowledge, a passion for History and Politics, and an ability to communicate that passion to pupils;
  • an ability to teach History and Politics at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 to all ability levels, including pupils with SEN;
  • a proven track record of excellent History and Politics teaching and, where relevant, outstanding outcomes for pupils at both GCSE and A-level;
  • an understanding of the ethos of the West London Free School, and a commitment to teaching a knowledge-based curriculum;
  • high expectations of pupil conduct and behaviour;
  • excellent team working skills;
  • excellent communication skills with both pupils and staff;
  • a willingness to contribute to the school’s co-curricular programme.
