Teacher of History job summary
The History department comprises of 3 full-time teachers, including a Curriculum Leader who are all passionate Historians and experienced teaching practitioners. We are looking for a 4th full-time member of the team. We work collaboratively to support each other both with the demands of our work and our wellbeing. Planning is centralised as we aim to work collaboratively so the department is fully resourced. However, teachers are encouraged to use their own expertise, select sources and material suitable to the learners in their classes, and have flexibility in how they address learning objectives to ensure the best outcomes for their students.
The successful candidate will make History engaging, relevant and teach students about the world they live in to help them make sense of modern life by linking to past lives and events. The successful candidate will value developing key employability and life skills such as analysing evidence, considering impact, critical thinking, research, reciprocation and value developing literacy.
History is a popular GCSE option. We will have 12 classes across Key Stage 4 from September 2025. GCSE studies start in Year 9. The successful candidate will be able to each up to Key Stage 4 across a wide range of abilities and be an inspirational practitioner.
At Key Stage 4, our students currently follow AQA:-
- Germany, 1890-1945: Democracy and dictatorship
- Conflict and tension: The inter-war years, 1918-1939
- Britain: Health and the people: c1000 to the present day
- Elizabethan England, c1568-1603
Aylesbury Vale Academy has out-performed all other local non-selective schools. Like the Academy results as a whole, History GCSE results evidence students make good progress. Since 2019, when the current Curriculum Leader joined the department, History attainment scores have continued to rise. Progress 8 also continues to be the positive. The gaps between the progress of SEN and Pupil Premium students continues to narrow. The successful candidate will be joining an extremely effective department with ambitious goals who do do not take students' background as a barrier to achievement.
The successful candidate will be passionate about learning, have strong inter-personal skills, be resilient and be an excellent teacher. The ideal candidate will have great subject knowledge. A proven track record of success with delivering GCSE History would be an advantage.
Our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our children will be reflected throughout the recruitment process, and the successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and an online screening check.
We have the right to withdraw this advert before the closing date should we able to appoint.
