The Department

The Maths Department at DHSB is made up of a team of friendly and supportive mathematics specialists. Wherever the timetable allows, each member of the department teaches a selection of classes from across the full range of age and ability groups.

The Curriculum

Students are taught Mathematics in tutor groups in Year 7 then set by attainment for the remainder of Key Stages 3 and 4. Class sizes in Years 7 and 8 are typically 30 students and between 15 and 30 in later years.

GCSE studies begin mid-way through Year 9, and students in the top GCSE sets also have the opportunity to sit the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths.

A Level Mathematics

A level Mathematics is a very popular choice at the school. Recent years have seen upwards of 100 students opting to study Maths in Year 12, with a further 15 to 20 opting to study Further Maths.

All permanent faculty staff are expected to teach the subject at A level, and the opportunity to teach at this level would exist for suitable candidates. Support and training is available and encouraged for staff teaching unfamiliar material for the first time.

Core Maths

In September 2020 the school introduced Core Maths for the first time and the take up has been excellent.

Results

GCSE grades are consistently outstanding with 100% of the current cohort expected to attain grades 5 to 9. 60 to 70% are typically expected to achieve a grade 7, 8 or 9.

Many students study Maths or Maths related subjects at university, with a number going on each year to study Mathematics at Oxford or Cambridge.

The Post

The post would suit a positive, enthusiastic and innovative teacher keen to work in a collaborative and supportive working environment with high professional standards and a strong work ethic.
