Teacher of Maths job summary

Mathematics lessons are engaging, pupil-centred and designed to develop confidence, fluency and resilience in problem-solving. Pupils are encouraged to think critically, reason mathematically and apply their knowledge to a wide range of real-life and abstract contexts. Learning is carefully sequenced to build secure foundations while developing increasingly sophisticated mathematical understanding.

Key Stage 3: Years 7-8

Pupils study Mathematics for between three and four periods each week. All pupils follow a carefully planned scheme of learning designed by the Mathematics department, which builds progressively on prior knowledge and develops a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts. The curriculum promotes fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, ensuring pupils are well prepared for the demands of GCSE Mathematics and beyond.

An adaptive teaching approach ensures that all pupils access the same ambitious curriculum, with learning tailored to meet the needs of individuals and classes. This enables the department to stretch and challenge the most able mathematicians whilst providing appropriate support and intervention for pupils who require additional assistance. Where appropriate, learning support staff work alongside subject teachers to help pupils achieve success and develop confidence in their mathematical abilities.

The progress of each pupil is assessed through end-of-topic assessments, regular knowledge checks and termly common assessments, culminating in an end-of-year examination.

Key Stage 4: Years 9-11

At Key Stage 4, pupils continue to study Mathematics as a core subject. Pupils follow the Pearson - Edexcel Mathematics specification and are taught by specialist mathematics teachers. The curriculum develops secure mathematical knowledge and skills while preparing pupils for further education, employment and everyday life.

Pupils are taught in mixed-attainment groups during Years 9 and 10. In Year 11, groups may be organised according to current working grades to ensure pupils receive the most appropriate level of challenge and support as they prepare for their GCSE examinations. Regular assessment, targeted intervention and personalised support help all pupils make strong progress towards achieving their potential.
