Teacher of Maths job summary

Nishkam Schools are Sikh ethos multi-faith schools that take a distinctive approach to many traditional faith schools. We are committed to academic excellence grounded in a selfless approach to life (nishkam).

The Sikh dharam (faith or religious responsibility) is emphatic in respecting all faiths and not seeking converts, maximising our contribution towards a cohesive society. It has a unique multi-faith ethos and the School will reflect this by positively nurturing children of all faiths and those of no particular belief. Worshipping collectively and within specific faith groups is an innovative characteristic of the Schools, as children learn from faith, not just about faith.

Nishkam Schools aim to nurture lifelong learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and compassionate contributors to society. We have, as a trust, grown and have become a family of teachers and students that have the same attitude, respect and love for becoming better human beings and improving our minds and hearts to make a difference in our homes, community and the wider world. If global is local then we are here to show our neighbours that we can all work together and improve not only our education in learning and teaching but our life experience to become selfless humble individuals.

We believe that to build strong communities and responsible citizens, our efforts must go beyond our current standard models of education and encompass a holistic approach. We believe that faith-based organisations have a significant role to play as part of the wider community; the heritage they draw upon illuminates some of the deeper quests for meaning and value in human life, going onto inspire a new vision and greater responsibility in our endeavours. We believe that our faith-inspired virtues define the character of education and that they should be intrinsic to a positive outlook on life. Virtues are awakened and strengthened in us when they are practised in front of us every day. At the Schools, we work to ensure both our educators and learners are instinctively exercising virtues in every thought, decision and action.

“All the world is my school and all humanity my teacher”, George Whitman. We are improving, developing and finding innovative ways to bring a new way of education to the world. The first multi-faith trust in the country showing the way forward to all that we can share our common values to strive for excellence.

We thank you for considering joining us on this journey and look forward to receiving your application.

Overview

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join an outstanding school adopting a faith-inspired, virtues-led approach to education, with outstanding results and outcomes for children.

The post will support the Faculty Leader to ensure:

·        High standards of learning and teaching.

·        A quality curriculum.

·        Excellent preparation, implementation of content and assessment, ensuring all pupils make better than expected progress.

Our vision within the Maths Faculty is to deliver an ambitious yet inclusive curriculum to all pupils at Nishkam High School Birmingham. Fitting with our faith inspired and virtues led approach, we aim to impart our passion and enthusiasm for Mathematics onto our students, so they are able to appreciate the awe and wonder of Mathematics in the world around us.

Our goal is to encourage students to develop virtues such as resilience and determination in their journey towards fluency and becoming successful problem solvers. Our curriculum design allows pupils to revisit key topics often within Key Stage 3 and 4 through a spiral curriculum, this allows pupils to leave us with the strong numerical skills they will need future learning and employment. Our pedagogy is supported by a mastery approach, where we assess pupils on their understanding and forensically determine where misconceptions lie, and how to tackle them before moving forward. We strongly believe that investing in a strong mathematical foundation knowledge through fluency, means that we can build strong structures in later years and develop students reasoning skills. In line with evidence-based practices regarding cognitive load theory, we revisit topics taught in the previous half term, term and year within starters; this will allow pupils to recall information thus embedding key concepts into their long-term memory.

Our inclusive curriculum allows pupils at all levels to be stretched and challenged as well as offering support when needed. With a strong focus on quality first teaching, our team are passionate about ensuring all students can access our curriculum through excellent planning and delivery of lessons. We intend to develop this further by putting more emphasis of prior knowledge checks to ensure that pupils are confident in the skills before we introduce new concepts within the lesson. As well as accessing the curriculum during lesson time, students use various online platforms to complete independent study, this will allow pupils to develop accountability for their own progress and independence to delve further into the curriculum. Students will also get exciting opportunities to see real life links to our curriculum through trips, visits and experiences. Within KS5, we have wider curriculum books within the library to give our students a broad view of mathematics and how this is applied in different industries and within popular culture.
