What skills and experience we're looking for

The Vacancy

We are seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic and able teacher to join our Maths team here at Queen Elizabeth’s High School from September 2026.

The role would ideally suit an individual who, along with the appropriate qualifications, is extremely motivated and enthusiastic. The ability to teach A Level Maths and Further Maths would be an advantage but is not essential and applicants wishing to teach 11-16 would be welcomed.

As we are such a large, friendly, supportive and forward-looking team there is always someone with whom you can discuss issues and develop new ideas. The majority of the teaching occurs in a specialised set of rooms, clustered together in ‘The Maths Corridor’, and all of which are equipped with interactive whiteboards. The department is well resourced with text books, software and other equipment.

What the school offers its staff

The QEHS Mathematics Department is a high performing team, not only facilitating excellent 4+ and 5+ pass rates at GCSE but also guiding a significant proportion of students to top grades at both GCSE and A Level.

The Mathematics team is led by a Head of Department and is assisted by a Second in Maths who supports the day to day running of the department as well as coordinating additional activities. The rest of the department is made up of five dedicated Maths teachers plus a Deputy Head of the school. We have also a Maths Learning and Progress Assistant who supports the team and the students, particularly disadvantaged students and those with SEND.

The Mathematics Department works together as a team and are incredibly supportive of one another. There is a wealth of experience with staff teaching across all Key Stages and abilities wherever possible to ensure that all staff are knowledgeable about the QEHS Mathematics Learning Journey from start to finish.

There are seven specialist Maths rooms situated together which are well stocked with a variety of textbooks to use in lessons. We also have subscriptions to mymaths, Kerboodle, bossmaths and mathsbox to support both in the classroom and also with the independent learning of our students.

We are a reflective department who are always looking to deliver the best for our students. The department is well led and managed. As such, we are able to plan strategically to best support the students in our care, as well as each other.

Reviews and observations consistently show teaching and learning to be good, or better. Team planning is open to review and feedback from all stakeholders, and takes into consideration well-being and work life balance.

The Mathematics Curriculum

In lessons our students follow a bespoke QEHS curriculum designed to develop our learners into mathematicians, capable of fluently using mathematical techniques as well as developing their ability to apply those skills to a variety of different problems. We encourage regular reflection through classwork and assessments to monitor progress not only in terms of specific topics but also the overarching themes of fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

Years 7-9

The Scheme of Learning covers the aims and objectives of the National Curriculum as well as embracing the guidance from the National Centre for the Excellence of Teaching Mathematics. Where possible we extend our students beyond this in order to prepare them for their GCSEs. Whilst the learning is nominally split into KS3 and KS4 the students are effectively working on a 5 year GCSE curriculum. Students are taught in mixed ability groups in Year 7 and then ability groups in Years 8 and 9.

Years 10-11

Students follow the AQA Mathematics course. To support the students with their organisation and revision we largely follow the OUP AQA Maths scheme which matches the textbooks used in school and is also available on Kerboodle. The students are taught in two bands with each band being grouped into four ability sets. The two set 4s in each band work towards the Foundation examination at the end of Year 10 in order to secure a pass grade. Students in these two groups then have the opportunity to improve their grade by taking the Higher exam at the end of Year 11 with the rest of the cohort. We have also introduced the AQA Level 2 qualification in Further Maths for our most able students.

Sixth Form

A Level Mathematics is a popular course at QEHS and we regularly have three or four groups in both Year 12 and 13. The students follow the AQA syllabus. We also offer Further Mathematics and regularly have a strong group of students follow this course. As a department we have the capacity and expertise to support entrance exams for Mathematics at Oxford and Cambridge as well as the mathematical elements of other entrance exams for physics, engineering, medicine amongst others.

Extra-curricular

Students in all year groups have the opportunity to take part in the UKMT Mathematics Challenge. We have many students achieving bronze, silver and gold awards as well as some having the opportunity to take part in further rounds. We have also taken teams in KS3, 4 and 5 to regional team challenges, winning on a number of occasions. There is an annual revision trip for Year 11 at PGL in Caythorpe.
