What the school offers its staff
Physical Education Department
Thank you for your enquiry regarding our vacancy for a Teacher of Physical Education, required for September 2026.
At present, the department consists of seven full time teachers and one part-time teacher. The facilities at the College are excellent with our outside facilities offering; seven newly surfaced tennis courts, three newly surfaced netball courts, A large playing field which has 3 11 aside football pitches; track and field athletics and a new 11 a side 3G Astro pitch. There is also a large, well-equipped sports hall, a hall, a gymnasium and ‘Interactive’ fitness suite and weights room.
In years 7 and 8 students are taught in mixed groups. They follow a broad and balanced curriculum of gymnastics, dance, health education, athletics and games. At present the programme is delivered in 4 x 55 minutes per fortnight. From year 9 students are taught in pathways and they have the opportunity to develop skills learnt in KS3 with a certain amount of choice being given to their programme. Sports Leaders Level 1 is offered at year 9 and has a large uptake of students. KS4 students have 3 lessons over the 2 week timetable.
BTEC Sport and GCSE PE are well established and obtain outstanding results. The courses are very popular with the students and there are large numbers of students taking the course from Year 9 through to Year 11. There are numerous interactive resources in the department for the teaching of the theory component.
The department are lucky to maintain the position of a full time teacher as a primary link role. This enables the department to strengthen its links with feeder schools and has increased the opportunity for students to participate in sport, and for staff to participate in continual professional development opportunities. Many of our students link with the feeder schools as part of their leadership component and HTC host many sports festivals throughout the year culminating in our Primary Sports Festival in the Summer term.
Strong emphasis is placed on extra-curricular clubs and there is ample opportunity to develop many of the different sports. Students are coached to school team standard, though students of all abilities are encouraged to participate. Locally, the College has a very high reputation and many students represent Area Schools’ sides, with a few going on to County/Regional/National level.
In the College there are plenty of opportunities to develop one’s interests and specialisms beyond the College day.
Staff new to the College are expected to take part in an induction programme designed to foster the common maintenance and development of the College’s ethos and practices. Applicants invited to interview will be expected to teach a lesson, details of which will be given at a later date.
