The Physics department has three laboratories, a Lecture Theatre and a departmental staff room. All teachers are given the opportunity to provide intellectual stimulation, stretch and challenge across all key stages. The department currently has six subject specialists and a Physics Technician.
From the beginning of Year 7, students are taught Physics as a separate science by subject specialists. In Year 9, all students start their Physics GCSE course and we utilise the time to stretch the students beyond the confines of the specification and further develop their practical skills. Physics is one of our most popular A-Level subjects and we consistently run four classes in sixth form.
What the school offers its staff
The department regularly run clinics to support students in achieving their academic potential and clubs to engage with those who wish to nurture their passion for Physics and Engineering further.
Each year the Physics department supports many students in their applications to Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities to read Physics or Engineering degrees. Our students are well-behaved, motivated, intellectually able and eager to flourish as Physicists. These excellent foundations enable us to run an outstanding range of practicals and extra-curricular activities, including Inspire lectures.
The department provides a very supportive environment to teach in and members of the team enjoy discussing and sharing ideas and resources to improve teaching and outcomes. Indeed, the opportunities for professional development are substantial, making Reading School an ideal place to either begin a teaching career or to continue to thrive and flourish in a supporting environment.
